SPORTS NEWS

  • Veteran coach Jon Heacock (65) announced on X that he will retire after 43 years, ending speculation he would join Penn State football. His departure leaves the defensive coordinator role open following recent staff changes.  Onward State
  • After returning from a rib injury, Josh Barr joined the updated InterMat rankings at No. 1 for the 197 lb class following Penn State’s dominant performance at the Journeymen Collegiate Wrestling Duals against Stanford and North Dakota State. Other wrestlers also shifted rankings after the dual meets.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State wrestling set a new Division I record with 77 straight dual wins at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville and remains No. 1 in national polls. They will face Rutgers at Rec Hall on January 10 at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.  Onward State
  • Former Penn State women's volleyball setter Izzy Starck announced her transfer to Pitt after stepping away last season to focus on her mental health; she played one full season with Penn State and will join the Panthers following their 30-5 season and NCAA Tournament Semifinals run.  Onward State
  • Mason Bandhauer, a three-star offensive tackle from Colorado, has committed to Penn State football after leaving Iowa State to follow coach Matt Campbell. He played three games last season and is expected to bolster Happy Valley's football team.  Onward State
  • Penn State men’s volleyball was picked to finish first in the EIVA preseason poll on Tuesday, Dec. 23, with players Ryan Merk and Owen Rose named as players to watch.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State redshirt freshmen wide receiver Aaron Enterline and linebacker Kari Jackson declared intent to enter the transfer portal Tuesday — joining a total of seven players seeking new opportunities at other schools. Enterline played seven snaps this season while Jackson appeared on kick coverage.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State men's soccer added Brad Cole and Owen Jack when they joined head coach Rob Dow at Happy Valley. The two coaches, who worked at Vermont and earned awards, aim to strengthen the team in the Big Ten.  Onward State
  • Defensive line coach Deion Barnes will join South Carolina as the DE/OLB coach after three seasons with Penn State, where his guidance helped produce the most defensive ends drafted since his 2020 return. The move will update the football staff ahead of next season.  Onward State
  • Penn State field hockey sophomore goalie Aby Deverka was selected to compete in USA Field Hockey's U21 Junior National Camp from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 in Charlotte for a chance to earn a spot on the 2026 national team.  Daily Collegian
  • Two Penn State wrestlers earned Big Ten honors on Dec. 23 at the Journeymen Collegiate Wrestling Duals. Marcus Blaze was named Freshman of the Week after bonus wins, while Shayne Van Ness earned Wrestler of the Week after a tech fall and decision win; both remain undefeated at 10-0.  Daily Collegian
