BUSINESS NEWS

  • Juana’s Venezuelan Cuisine ended its weeklong celebration Friday at 7 p.m. at 129 S. Fraser St. and closed after seven years in business. Owner Ady Martinez will offer catering and special events and plans to relaunch with a new format early next year (2026).  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirty-four Penn State faculty completed the fall 2025 Emerging Academic Leaders program as part of a University-wide initiative to prepare them for future leadership roles. Applications for the fall 2026 cohort will open in February 2026 (via the Center for Faculty and Development website).  Penn State
  • A new study led by a Penn State scientist using NASA+Chandra data shows that only about 30% of small galaxies have supermassive black holes, unlike larger ones that nearly always do. The research analyzed over 1,600 galaxies over two decades and may change theories on black hole formation.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences announced $540K in mid-scale seed grants to eight teams of faculty for projects that will boost research hubs across University Park, Behrend and Hershey — aiming to strengthen multi-disciplinary collaboration.  Penn State
  • A Penn State professor and his team proposed a new theory (zentropy) that explains how transparent ceramics can steer light better, which may lead to faster, smaller devices for internet, imaging, and sensing. The group made the ceramics in the lab and plans to scale production soon.  Penn State
  • Penn State professor Stefano Terlizzi was named to American Nuclear Society's 40 Under 40 list for his work in advancing nuclear science. His research on microreactor simulation with Idaho National Laboratory shows his commitment to new reactor technology.  Penn State
  • Researchers at Penn State developed a high-speed platform that produces synthetic brochosomes at over 100,000 particles per second (this breakthrough was published on Dec. 12) and could lead to advanced camouflage and precision sensors.  Penn State
  • Penn State professor Kirk French is wrapping up his popular Anthropology of Alcohol course this fall at 100 Thomas Building, where 726 students learned about fermenting traditions from ancient China to modern America. The course mixes interactive lectures (including a moonshine sample) with serious lessons on culture and alcohol abuse.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State scientists yesterday published research in Science Advances that reveals a single isopeptide link—acting like a loaded die—that creates an imbalance in virus shells which guides RNA release for rapid infection. Their finding could pave the way for new antiviral therapies and more effective RNA delivery for gene editing.  Penn State
  • Penn State's Jessica Grembi received a $500,000 grant from the Gates Foundation to study how the gut microbiome may affect environmental enteropathy in pregnant women. The research will use CapScan to collect samples in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Senegal and Zambia to help develop better treatments.  Penn State

  • Penn State Football announced five new coaches for Matt Campbell’s staff on Friday. Skip Brabenec will serve as chief of staff, Aaron Hillmann as director of sports performance operations, Reid Kagy as head strength and conditioning coach, Brandon Pietrzyk as his assistant, and Trent Slattenow as director of player personnel.  Onward State
  • Penn State left guard Vega Ioane opted out of the Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson on Friday and declared for the NFL draft (joining other teammates leaving the team). He was one of the season's best, showing strong pass protection and run blocking.  StateCollege.com
  • Sisters Sienna and Sheree Wilson combined for 32 points to help the Little Lions defeat the Cougars, 56-38, on Friday night in a Mid-Penn Conference game in Harrisburg. Sheree scored 18 points while Sienna added 14 points.  PennLive
  • Penn State women’s hockey will play RMU at Beaver Stadium for its first-ever hockey game at West Shore Home Field on Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. (free admission).  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's hockey announced puck drop times for its January series against Michigan State. The team will play Friday, Jan. 30 at Pegula Ice Arena at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 31 at Beaver Stadium at 1 p.m.  Daily Collegian
