BUSINESS NEWS

  • 7 Brew Coffee opened on South Atherton Street on Dec. 9, offering a drive-thru menu with creative options that drew mixed reviews from local staffers. Some praised the fast service + busy drive-thru line, while others found the menu confusing.  Onward State

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tunes from the Newsroom is a series highlighting local artists and recently featured the band 3:46 Sunrise. The episode shows band members Sonny Vitureira, Trevor Brown, Andrew Gille and Matt Colannino connecting Penn State with State College talent.  Daily Collegian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center will host two free financial literacy webinars for Penn State students and the public, with 'Considering Home Ownership' on Jan. 6 and 'All About Taxes' on Jan. 20 at noon–1 p.m. Experts from PNC and the Center will lead the sessions.  Penn State
  • Penn State chemist Ken Knappenberger was named a 2026 Optica Fellow, recognizing his work in structural photonics (including plasmonic nanostructures and quantum photonics). His appointment at Eberly College builds on a record of award-winning research.  Penn State
  • A research team led by University of Delaware and including Penn State’s Andrew Zydney has received $10.5M in funding through the Gates Grand Challenges Program to cut manufacturing costs for monoclonal antibodies. Penn State will focus on new membrane-based purification methods (its share is $600K).  Penn State
  • Penn State launched a new quantum theory center on Dec. 09 at the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences to boost research in quantum and computing sciences. The center follows several recent initiatives that fund faculty projects and grant programs, strengthening the university’s commitment to innovation.  Penn State
  • Penn State Athletics announced that 110 student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for fall programs. The students met requirements with full-time enrollment and at least a 3.0 GPA, including several athletes with perfect 4.0 scores from sports like football and women’s soccer.  Penn State
  • Fatoumata Doumbia, a Penn State honors student (Chaiken Scholar), uses her dual major in global and African studies along with study abroad experiences in Benin, Australia, Bulgaria, and Cambodia to prepare for a career in international development. She says her Malian heritage inspires her vision to promote West African self-sufficiency.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State football named former Iowa State offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser as its new play caller today. He spent 10 seasons with Campbell in Ames and two seasons as the Cyclones’ play caller, following former tight end coach Ty Howle’s move to Virginia Tech.  Onward State
  • South Carolina hired Stan Drayton from Penn State as its running back coach on Thursday morning. He spent the 2025 season with the Nittany Lions after serving as head coach at Temple.  Onward State
  • Former Iowa State offensive line coach and run game coordinator Ryan Clanton joins Penn State Football’s coaching staff in Happy Valley as part of Campbell’s transition. He spent 2018 to 2022 at Northern Iowa and recently worked with the Cyclones in Ames.  Onward State
  • Penn State football cornerback Elliot Washington II (with one year of eligibility remaining) plans to enter the transfer portal after appearing in at least 10 games each season and recording 18 tackles in 2025; he is the second Nittany Lion to announce such a move.  Onward State
  • Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles was hired by Tennessee on a three-year deal after one year with the Nittany Lions. His new contract includes salary increases from $2 million next year to $2.4 million in 2028.  StateCollege.com
  • After wins over Lehigh and Drexel, Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson said his team is ready for a tough road trip as it will face Wyoming on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 8 p.m. in Laramie with a focus on team bonding & growth despite injuries.  Onward State
  • Penn State is offering free t-shirts to the first 1,000 students at tomorrow’s noon game versus No. 9 Michigan State (gates open one hour early) during its home conference opener. The shirt features a snowman with Penn State basketball below it.  Daily Collegian
