COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Volunteers and staff at the Arboretum at Penn State harvested 2,872 pounds of produce during this growing season— the highest ever— and donated it to the State College Food Bank to help ensure local food security before Thanksgiving break. Penn State
- ➤ Light Up Night 2025 took place Thursday in downtown State College and featured live performances, free trolley rides, artisan booths, Santa visits and free hot drinks along Allen Street and Calder Way—Santa later chose a child to help light the Downtown Evergreen Tree at the Allen Street Gates. Community groups such as Kish Bank and the Lions Foundation helped spread cheer through free treats and toy donations for families in need—local youth artists also sold handmade crafts during the event. - ➤ Penn State named Josh Davis as its new senior vice provost and chief of staff, effective Jan. 5. He was vice chancellor and chief of staff at Nebraska and will work closely with the provost to advance key university initiatives. Penn State
- ➤ On November 3rd, the Penn State Dickinson Law Civil Rights Appellate Clinic visited Washington to watch Supreme Court oral arguments on Rico v. United States and Hencely v. Fluor Corporation—arranged by Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Led by Professor Michael Foreman, the third-year law students learned key skills by observing how the justices questioned attorneys during the proceedings. Penn State
- ➤ Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center will host two free financial literacy webinars for the Penn State community in December. The webinars cover Debt Management on December 2 and Identity Theft on December 16 — a PNC speaker will present each session to help attendees build solid money management skills. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State has received a five-year, $824,000 federal grant to train 40 new bachelor’s-level vocational rehabilitation professionals to help state agencies address staffing shortages — the program led by Allison Fleming will offer tuition, internships and mentoring to support students in entering a rewarding public service career. Recruitment for the first group will begin in spring and awards are expected by summer and fall — the initiative is set to expand opportunities for those supporting people with disabilities. - ➤ Penn State announced that nine faculty and staff received Fulbright awards for the 2025-26 academic year – six earned Fulbright Scholar Awards, one earned the International Education Administrator Award and two received Fulbright Specialist Awards. They celebrated these honors at a luncheon on Nov. 17 to kick off International Education Week. Penn State
- ➤ This summer, Penn State’s science outreach and diversity offices partnered with Upward Bound Programs to host the first Uplifting Science camp for 19 high schoolers who spent a week on campus exploring science and developing their STEM identity – they attended physics workshops, toured labs and the planetarium, and set personal goals for future college success. - ➤ College Township Council reviewed final plans on Thursday for the first phase of a 48-acre residential development behind Pleasant Pointe apartments on Shiloh Road—this phase will build 197 units with a mix of townhomes, apartment buildings, and workforce housing plus offer a community center. The council will take final action on Dec. 18, and the developer plans to break ground in 2026 with phase one finishing in the fall. StateCollege.com

- ➤ A Penn State study found that feeding, sleep, and play routines set in the first two months may lead to higher weight at six months—raising early signs of obesity risk. Researchers used the Early Healthy Lifestyles tool with 143 families in northeastern Pennsylvania to help doctors give better support to new parents. Penn State

- ➤ Jeff Cook resigned as the Penn State men’s soccer coach after eight seasons with a 66-49-23 record and will leave Happy Valley to join an MLS club. His tenure included three NCAA Tournament appearances and championships in 2021 and 2023 — he also earned two Big Ten Coach of the Year awards. Daily Collegian
- ➤ Penn State baseball will face the Air Force Falcons on February 13 in Phoenix, Arizona as part of the MLB Classic Desert Invitational — marking only the second meeting between the teams — in an early-season game. - ➤ Penn State women’s hockey beat RIT 5-3 Friday night and kept its winning streak with two shorthanded goals boosting their record to 15-0-0. The team will finish its series today at 3 p.m. at the Gene Polisseni Center — they remain the only undefeated squad in the nation. Onward State
