Good morning, State College. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 17th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This past week, Happy Valley had its first snowfall, a veterans celebration, record THON fundraising and wins by Penn State sports teams including men’s basketball beating Navy 80-71 and strong performances by women’s hockey, soccer, football and volleyball. Photographers captured the week as Riley Green performed in concert — Liz Gillies spoke at a campus event — and the campus prepared for break.  Onward State
  • Downtown State College will host Light Up Night on November 20 from 5 to 8 p.m.—the event on Fraser Street and Allen Street will feature a winter carnival with free trolley rides, festive treats, local artisan markets, and a drawing for one child to light the grand evergreen tree when a donation is made by 7 p.m.  Onward State
  • The Penn State community gathered at the Spiritual Center to celebrate Mimi Coppersmith’s life as a respected businesswoman and philanthropist—attendees shared heartfelt stories that honored her lasting influence on many.  WTAJ
  • Abandoned dogs have been rising in Centre County as two stray dogs, Charm and Scrabble, were found in Milesburg and Snow Shoe and are now cared for at Centre County PAWS—showing a growing community crisis. Shelter staff say full kennels and extra overflow rooms force caretakers to prioritize sick or injured animals while housing and rising pet costs push owners to surrender their pets.  StateCollege.com
  • Centre Area Transportation Authority is launching its annual food drive and riders can drop canned and nonperishable items on buses or at the customer service center at 108 E. Beaver Ave until December 15 — all donations will support Lion’s Pantry and State College Food Bank.  Onward State

CULTURE NEWS

  • Onward State celebrates its 17th birthday—this student-run blog began in Simmons Hall when three freshmen posted a rumor that turned out true and has since grown to publish over 44,000 posts and reach 340,000 social media fans. It remains a leading source for Penn State news and conversation, marking its long-standing impact on campus life.  Onward State
