- ➤ Today the Downtown State College Improvement District hosts The Joyfull: Soles of Duende Edition—a free event from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that invites all to enjoy a meal, live performance and conversation; the program and menu will be announced later and free sustainable utensil sets are offered to first-time attendees while supplies last. - ➤ Aleksandra “Seša” Slavković, a Penn State professor of statistics and public health sciences — who also serves as associate dean for research — was honored with the Links Lecture Award by the American Statistical Association; she presented the lecture virtually on Jan. 23 from noon to 1:30 p.m., highlighting her work on data privacy and confidentiality. - ➤ Researchers at Penn State used the BONCAT method—a chemical-labeling technique—to find that active soil microbes near plant roots help plants absorb nutrients better than their more abundant but dormant counterparts. The findings suggest that using microbes that wake up near roots could lead to more effective inoculants and sustainable crop practices. Penn State

- ➤ Penn State men’s hockey moved up to No. 3 in the USCHO poll after a weekend sweep over Ohio State and a 9-1-0 record. The team will face No. 1 Michigan State in East Lansing this upcoming weekend—this contest is seen as a key battle among top-five squads. Onward State
- ➤ During the first weekend of wrestling, future Penn State recruits Landon Sidun, Sam Herring, and Jayden James wrestled at the Clarion Open, with Sidun winning early bouts before losing later and his teammates posting mixed results. Three former Penn State wrestlers — Zack Ryder, David Evans, and Aurelius Dunbar — competed for new teams, with Ryder earning a big win and the others showing promise in their matches. - ➤ Penn State football will face Michigan State on November 15 at 3:30 p.m. on either CBS or the Big Ten Network for the Land Grant Trophy—this is the first trophy contest in two years as both teams struggle in Big Ten play. Onward State
- ➤ Penn State interim head coach Terry Smith said the team will throw deeper passes this week after Saturday’s game against Ohio State, where the quarterback averaged 5.2 yards per attempt.
