CULTURE NEWS

  • Sustain Penn State’s Intersections film series will host an online screening of the film Merchants of Doubt at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5—followed by a panel discussion under the Our Common Purpose initiative that examines how scientific disinformation affects public regulation.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erica Mi, a Penn State graduate who earned three degrees in 2022, got the CSGrad4US Fellowship from the National Science Foundation to pursue a doctorate in computer science at the University of Chicago. She will study how people work with computers and ethics—using social science with computing to guide new research.  Penn State
  • Penn State released a preview report on the COACHE Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey that gathered responses from full-time faculty during spring; the report uses peer comparisons to show strengths in Facilities and Work Resources and concerns with Promotion to Full and Tenure Policies—findings that will guide a three-year review process. University leaders and committees will use the survey data to set priorities for improving the faculty work experience.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Lionettes—a student dance team—lost their funding for travel and lodging to compete in nationals in Orlando due to university budget cuts and now must raise $70,000 by early December.   • On Nov. 4, Penn State's Science Policy Society will host a workshop titled Conservation Policy in the Final Frontier from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 233AB of the HUB-Robeson Center. Participants will join small groups to design rules for a lunar resource dispute — a free event that requires advance registration by Oct. 31 — and learn about fair space sharing.  Penn State
  • Rens Verburg, senior vice president at WSP USA and geochemist, will give a free talk titled 'The Critical Minerals Rush — Not So Fast' on Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. in 112 Walker Building at University Park with a Zoom option available; he will discuss how to develop mine operations and address critical minerals needs responsibly. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Entomologists at Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences found that spotted lanternflies that fed on tree of heaven stored a bitter chemical—quassinoids—that kept many birds from eating them. Their study, published Oct. 23, showed birds preferred lanternflies without the toxic shield and the finding may help shape future pest management strategies.  Penn State

  • Penn State men's basketball enters its third season under coach Mike Rhoades with a young team ranked No. 18 in the Big Ten preseason poll. Staff predictions vary from a near-.500 record to struggles in conference play starting Dec 9 in Bloomington as key players like Kayden Mingo and seven-footer Ivan Jurić are expected to lead the mostly freshman squad.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men’s hockey moved back to No. 4 in the national poll after a series sweep over Stonehill where JJ Wiebusch scored a late goal to win the first game and freshman Shea Van Olm secured the second win. They will open Big Ten play this weekend in Columbus—taking on No. 17 Ohio State.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women's basketball coach Carolyn Kieger said the team’s frontcourt has more depth than ever—returning center Gracie Merkle and new forwards Maggie Mendelson, Amiya Evans and freshman Rachael Okokoh, who played for Canada's U19 team, will boost the rotation for the 2025-26 season.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women’s hockey remains No.6 in the latest USCHO poll released Monday after a five-series sweep boosted them to double-digit wins — they will play a two-game series against RMU on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday at 5:00 p.m.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State interim head coach Terry Smith met with the media on Monday to preview the challenge against top-ranked Ohio State this Saturday and outlined plans to focus on running the football while limiting explosive plays. He said the team will use the bye week to refine its game plan and maintain strong communication with recruits — a strategy aimed at ending their underdog status.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State men's hockey swept a two-game series against Stonehill over the weekend and leaped to No. 4 in the USCHO poll with a 7-1-0 record ahead of Big Ten play. The team will face No. 17 Ohio State at 6:00 p.m. on October 30 as they begin conference play.  Onward State
