BUSINESS NEWS

  • Centre Markets will close its Nittany Mall store from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26 and then move to a renovated 1850s building at 112 W. Pine Grove Rd in Pine Grove Mills — final inspections are underway and a mid-November opening is planned while online pickups continue uninterrupted.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michael J. Waters, an assistant professor in Art History at Columbia University, will deliver the Dickson Lecture (Architecture after Vignola: Classicism, Conformity, and Copying in the Era of Print) on November 5 at 5:30 p.m. in 201 Thomas Building to explore how print shaped European architectural design.  Penn State
  • Penn State has opened a national search for a new dean for the Bellisario College of Communications, which serves over 2,800 students and many staff. The new dean will run academic and financial operations and must hold a doctorate or show strong leadership experience.  Penn State
  • Campus Dining will host a Harvest Masquerade Dinner on Oct 29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Hintz Alumni Center — the ticketed event offers a six-course tasting menu with seasonal dishes where formal attire and masquerade masks are encouraged.  Penn State

  • Researchers from Penn State and international colleagues discovered a super-Earth called GJ 251 c less than 20 light-years away that is almost four times Earth’s mass and sits in its star’s habitable zone where liquid water might exist—future telescopes will study its atmosphere for signs of life.  Penn State
  • Maya Bergman, an early childhood and elementary education major from Clarkston, Michigan, has been chosen as the student marshal for the fall commencement at Penn State College of Education—she will represent her peers during the ceremony scheduled for Dec. 21 and plans to start her teaching career after graduation.  Penn State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center will close to visitors intermittently starting Oct. 27 as it begins work on expanding its parking lot and improving stormwater management. The project will start with tree removal before earth moving and paving increase the lot from 70 to about 155 spaces—new drainage basins, accessible parking, and electric vehicle charging stations will follow.  Penn State

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Fencing is up and construction vehicles are moving into place at Westerly Parkway Plaza where Landmark Properties and its partners will demolish two old commercial buildings to begin work on a new student housing complex — The Retreat at Westerly. The complex will offer 142 units with 546 beds for students — with leasing to begin in fall 2026 and occupancy planned for fall 2027 — and will include a clubhouse, resort-style pool, pickleball court and study lounges.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State wrestling secured a commitment from State College High School junior James Whitbred, a class of 2027 prospect ranked No. 98 by FloWrestling. He recorded a 41-18 record while competing at weights between 144 and 160 pounds over two seasons under coach Jason Nickal and will join fellow local commits Gavin Mangano and Landon Sidun.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women’s soccer is feeling the pressure as the Big Ten tournament gets underway, with coach Erica Dambach saying the team is ready for the challenge. The Nittany Lions will host Ohio State on Sunday at Jeffrey Field as they try to secure a chance to host the NCAA tournament.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State's men's and women's basketball teams hosted their annual Ball at East Hall event on Wednesday at East Hall (the event built excitement ahead of the season ticket sale) with coaches Rhoades and Kieger speaking and students taking on skills challenges including a half-court shot contest. Both teams will start their season on November 3 at Bryce Jordan Center, with the men's team playing the Fairfield Stags and the women's team facing the Bucknell Bison.  Onward State
