COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Penn State and local community leaders hosted PA Dignity Day 2025 on Oct. 15 to share ideas on living with dignity and respect. The event featured speeches and workshops that brought residents together—participants discussed ways to improve how everyone is treated in the community. Penn State
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Edgar Allan Poe Crawl starts today at 7pm as downtown State College offers a mystery walk where participants can explore themed stops with food and beverages available. The event will run until October 25 and tickets range from $15 for the preview (at Tempest Studios) to $25 later on. Downtown State College
- ➤ Six the Musical will play at Eisenhower Auditorium from November 18 through November 20 at 7:30 p.m. each night, and ticket prices will range from $74 to $89 for an adult, $48 to $53 for a University Park student, and $57 to $72 for a child. Onward State
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sana Ahrar, who earned her doctorate from Penn State College of Arts and Architecture, was awarded the Michael Brill Research Grant in Urban Communication to study how people use mobile tools in informal settlements. She will use the $3,000 grant for fieldwork in India and now teaches at NC State. Penn State
- ➤ Lucy Schilling, a Penn State student majoring in Spanish and advertising/public relations (with a minor in journalism), leads the Blue Band as president and builds strong connections on and off campus. She brings skills from her study abroad in Cadiz, Spain (where she managed social media) to guide the band and prepare future leaders. Penn State
- ➤ Two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists will visit University Park campus for the Foster-Foreman Conference on Oct. 28-29 to deliver keynote lectures & each session will include a question-and-answer period at Foster Auditorium in Paterno Library. - ➤ Skip Smith’s estate gift of $25 million will help grow Penn State’s Arboretum by funding a permanent endowment, deferred repairs, and matching funds for future donations—his bequest raises his total legacy to about $43 million and supports educational and research projects. Penn State
- ➤ Schreyer Scholar Morgan Dawkins, a third-year Penn State architectural engineering student, has boosted her leadership skills by serving as NSBE treasurer & co-executive director of the Schreyer Scholar Ambassadors while taking part in the Presidential Leadership Academy. Her honors thesis focuses on proactive engineering to design resilient buildings for communities facing climate change, and she plans to work for a company that shares her forward-thinking approach after graduation. - ➤ Drivers along Shiloh Road near the Trout Road intersection experienced a brief stoppage on Oct. 22 due to excavation work for a hotel development, and additional stops are scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 24, Oct. 28, Oct. 29, Oct. 30, and Oct. 31—motorists using the I-99 off-ramps will be redirected onto alternate exits. - ➤ Paul Martin, the former USAID and NASA inspector general, will discuss government oversight in a free lecture on Nov 6 at 5 p.m. in Foster Auditorium—102 Paterno Library. He will share insights from his 40 years in public service and be introduced by former Rep Charlie Dent. Penn State

- ➤ Jackson Smith, a Penn State hockey player, was picked 14th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets this summer—his selection was announced in Los Angeles by Meredith Gaudreau, marking the start of his NHL journey. He has averaged a point per game since his debut and will soon travel to Columbus for a Big Ten opener as he works on getting stronger and faster. Onward State
- ➤ Penn State's offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki said the offense is struggling and noted that both running back Nick Singleton and quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer must improve ahead of upcoming games against top teams.
