  • El Jefe’s Taqueria raised $30,864 on October 14 by donating 100% of every sale to THON as 2,201 customers joined the 20‑hour fundraiser. Owner John Schall said the store will hold the event each year until a cure for childhood cancer is found—showing their strong commitment to the cause.  Onward State

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pop group Big Time Rush will perform at the Bryce Jordan Center on Feb. 3 as part of its College Dropout tour and will be joined by supporting acts Katelyn Tarver and Stephen Kramer Glickman. Tickets starting at $54.55 go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24.  StateCollege.com

  • The Penn State Board of Trustees will meet Nov. 6-7 at University Park with committee meetings starting at 8 a.m. on Nov. 6 and the full board gathering at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 7—both sessions are open to the public via livestream.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Penn State research shows that post‑9/11 veterans face mental health challenges linked to childhood trauma, deployment length, and combat exposure. The study tracked almost 9,600 veterans over three years — revealing that men and women experience different patterns and underlining the need for early, tailored support.  Penn State
  • A Penn State researcher studied how online grocery shopping has affected food choices, food waste and nutritional gaps over the past five years—her work shows that while it helps some shoppers buy healthier foods, it can worsen food access in areas with few options. The study found that online shopping leads to fewer impulse buys and more thoughtful meal planning.  Penn State

  • ESPN College GameDay host Rece Davis said that Penn State players must share blame for the team’s 3-3 start that led to former coach James Franklin being fired. He said the players did not show the passion and energy needed to win games.  PennLive
  • After sweeping LIU last weekend at Pegula Ice Arena, Penn State men's hockey earned the No. 5 ranking in the USCHO poll—sophomore Matt DiMarsico scored a hat trick in Game 1 and added three points in Game 2. The Nittany Lions will return to Pegula to play Stonehill on Friday at 7 p.m.—their second game is set for Saturday at 6 p.m.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State lost to Iowa by one point at Kinnick Stadium on Oct. 18 (their first game under interim coach Terry Smith and fourth loss in a row), and Bob Flounders later explained what went right and wrong for the team.  PennLive
  • Penn State women’s hockey stayed at No. 6 in the USCHO poll released Monday and improved to 8-0 after sweeping Mercyhurst—the team will host a two-game home series against Lindenwood Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State football will play Ohio State on November 1 at noon on FOX—Ohio State leads the series 25-14 and is 7-0, while Penn State is 3-4 after its October 18 loss to Iowa and will play in Columbus for the first time in two years. The matchup is expected to be a major Big Ten test as Ohio State aims to extend its winning streak.  Onward State
  • Penn State goalkeeper Kealey Titmuss and defender Keiryn Jeter were called up to join the U.S. U20 Women’s Youth National Team for the October camp, and they aim to build on their past international experience.  Daily Collegian
