- ➤ Penn State Blue Band alum Michael Barasch launched Blue Line Media — a digital platform that gives college marching bands a voice and fills a gap in media coverage. He used his background in broadcast journalism to support the bands and plans to expand his company nationally. Onward State
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Maureen Bail established the Helen M., Ignatius J., and Joseph A. Bail Scholarship in Forest Ecosystem Management at Penn State with a $50,000 gift and help from her nephew Joe Walker, giving priority to full-time undergraduates in their fifth semester or higher who study forest ecosystem management. The scholarship honors her family while easing education costs and nurturing a passion for nature—planting seeds of hope for future forest stewards. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State earned a national Award at the My Green Lab Summit in September for its Sustainable Labs Program that helped more than 600 researchers in 79 labs improve safety and cut costs—promoting skills for future careers. The program also trained undergraduate consultants and built partnerships to reduce environmental impacts. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State students are invited to join a virtual conference from Oct. 27-28 to build leadership skills—featuring keynotes, breakout sessions and networking opportunities, with registration free for all undergraduate and graduate participants. - ➤ A study by Penn State and Oregon State showed that many users did not notice AI bias in training data that used mostly happy white faces, which led to mislabeling emotions for Black faces—participants only spotted bias when negative emotions were shown on Black faces. - ➤ On Oct. 10, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County partnered with XHAB 3D and the Centre County Housing and Land Trust to break ground on Pennsylvania's first 3D-printed home in Boalsburg—this three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath house uses a mobile 3D concrete printer and is expected to be finished by early summer. Cerrato, drafted in the second round by the Carolina Hurricanes and leading the NCAA with 11 points in his first four games, will join top American college players in the historic tournament.
