COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amid a state budget impasse, Centre Safe is expanding services for domestic violence victims, sexual assault survivors and families needing emergency shelter in State College as demand rises. Despite similar agencies facing layoffs statewide—such as the closure in Philadelphia—the center remains fully staffed and celebrates its 50th anniversary today.  ABC 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sustain Penn State will screen the film Union at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 as part of its Intersections film series in partnership with The Labor School — the film highlights the formation of the Amazon Labor Union and will be followed by a panel discussion on labor rights and history.  Penn State
  • The Arboretum at Penn State will host Pumpkin Fest on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 with food, live music, crafts, and jack-o'-lantern displays that bring families and students together to celebrate fall. Free pumpkins will be given on Oct. 12 so community members can create carvings for a contest scheduled later in the week — the event is a growing annual tradition.  Penn State
  • Ross Gay, an award-winning poet and essayist, will deliver the 25th annual Emily Dickinson Lecture in American Poetry on Oct. 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Paterno Library’s Foster Auditorium at Penn State. The lecture—free and open to the public—is set to highlight his notable work.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State Smeal College of Business has launched Smeal Direct, a new program for students applying for summer and fall 2026 that guarantees placement in a Smeal major if they meet academic requirements. Prospective students must show their interest on the Penn State application to access early business resources—strengthening their connection to the college.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Learning Factory will hold its Open House Closed Shop event on October 16 from 6-8 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Engineering Design and Innovation Building—student clubs will display hands-on projects and resources to promote learning.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gregg Township received an initial insurance payment of $528,617.66 from Travelers Casualty and Surety Company on Wednesday to cover nearly all of its losses from former secretary Pamela Hackenburg’s theft (representing 99.22% of the claimed $532,747.67), and the township expects a second payment for legal and accounting fees.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 20 Penn State field hockey team will face reigning NCAA champion Northwestern at 5 p.m. Friday at the Wildcats’ home turf to end a four-game road trip and improve a 5-6 overall record; the team hopes a win will boost their confidence ahead of three upcoming conference games.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's hockey released its promotional schedule today — it opens with the Frozen Four Banner Unveiling against Clarkson at the home opener and continues with Jersey Night on Oct. 17, Hockey Halloween versus Stonehill on Oct. 24, Teddy Bear Toss on Nov. 15, Senior Celly night on Jan. 4, 2026, The Mighty Nittany Lions night on Jan. 10, 2026 and concludes with the Wear White game on Mar. 6, 2026.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State Football will host Northwestern at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium—premium gates open at 12:30 p.m. and public gates at 1:30 p.m. Parking lots open at 8 a.m. and traffic restrictions will be in effect for game day travel.  Penn State
  • Penn State women’s soccer forward Aubrey Kulpa was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Midseason watch list on Tuesday after she led the team with eight goals and five assists and ranked second in the Big Ten (No. 22 nationwide) with 21 points. The team, now at 7-4-2 overall, will face the Washington Huskies at Jeffrey Field (today) at 7 p.m.  Onward State
  • Penn State quarterback Drew Allar said he will work hard at practice every day after two losses while focusing on raising his leadership and helping his team get ready to face Northwestern on Saturday.   • No. 4 Penn State men's hockey is set to play against Clarkson at Pegula Ice Arena at 6:30 p.m. today—coming off a sweep of Arizona State—while Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State football unveiled retro end zones inside Beaver Stadium in preparation for its Homecoming game against Northwestern this weekend. The new design features a classic script logo and a white collar on throwback uniforms—an update that celebrates the team's legacy.  Onward State
