COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Centre Safe marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Centre County by hosting events that support survivors and educate the community. The Centre County Courthouse is lit purple and officials will hold a proclamation on October 7 at 10 a.m. in Bellefonte—residents will also participate in ‘Purple Thursday’ on October 23 and view an exhibit at local YMCA branches. - ➤ Jeff Dunham will perform his new 'Artificial Intelligence' tour at the Bryce Jordan Center on April 23, 2026. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. with his famous puppets (Walter, Peanut, Achmed and others) joining the act in State College. WTAJ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Penn State College of Education Dean Kimberly Lawless will step down on Oct. 15 and return to the faculty, where she will study new approaches to using artificial intelligence in teaching and learning—supporting future AI-focused initiatives. The university will soon appoint an interim dean before launching a national search for a permanent leader later this fall. Penn State
- ➤ Researchers at Penn State have been selected to receive up to $7.5M from DARPA’s Next-Generation Microelectronics Manufacturing program to develop new chip systems using glass packaging and 3D integration — one of only six groups chosen from outside Texas. The team led by Madhavan Swaminathan will study wireless phased arrays and power converters to improve chip design for future needs. Penn State
- ➤ Nicholas Meisel, an associate professor at Penn State, is leading a project that will use a three-year — $400,000 NSF grant to integrate art education into engineering design for additive manufacturing. He and his team plan to teach artistic practices like deep noticing to students in courses such as EDSGN 100 and ME 340 to boost creative design. Penn State
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Onur Apul joined Penn State and is leading PFAS research to study how landfill biosolids and drinking water residuals release these chemicals into the environment. His work, funded by EREF and NSF grants, will help guide policymakers on proper waste management practices. Penn State
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Penn State reminds students that mental health support is available at CAPS in the Student Health Center as classes and activities continue this fall. Faculty and staff are trained to help using support programs like the Red Folder that guide students facing anxiety and loneliness. Penn State

- ➤ On Friday night, No. 16 Penn State women's volleyball was swept 3-0 by No. 1 Nebraska at Rec Hall—Nebraska winning the three sets 25-6, 25-15, and 25-13. Penn State will travel to Maryland Sunday at 4 p.m. for its next match on BTN. Onward State
- ➤ Today at 4 p.m., Penn State women’s soccer will face Rutgers at Yurcak Field after a six-day break, with the Nittany Lions looking to use top scorer Aubrey Kulpa to boost their attack—while Rutgers lags with only 11 total goals so far. Daily Collegian
- ➤ Penn State field hockey lost to Michigan 2—1 on Friday in a Big Ten game as the Lions took 12 shots but could not overcome Michigan’s tough play from penalty corners. The team will travel to Columbus to face Ohio State at 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 5. Onward State
- ➤ State College rallied from a slow start Friday night by scoring 16 unanswered points in the second half at West Shore Stadium — D’Antae Sheffey rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns to secure the 36-21 win over Cedar Cliff. PennLive
- ➤ Penn State men's soccer came back from a one-goal deficit — Van Danielson tied the score before Malick Daouda scored the winning goal — to win 2-1 at DeMartin Stadium on Friday; the win was their first in Big Ten play and the team will face King's College on Sunday at 3 p.m. Onward State
- ➤ Penn State men’s hockey opened the season without freshman defenseman Jackson Smith—selected as the program’s highest-drafted player—as he was scratched from Friday night’s game along with players Keaton Peters, Cade Christenson, and Alex Servagno. Onward State
