COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Centre Hall Fire Company will celebrate its 150th anniversary tomorrow with a parade starting at noon and a festival at the fire station that will offer games, food, raffles, and free gifts for children—culminating with a fireworks show at 7:30 p.m. Organizers welcome floats and additional fire companies as they plan one of the largest parades in Centre Hall in over a decade.  WTAJ
  • Saturday Baby Movers is a free storytime event on October 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in downtown State College where babies ages 15 to 24 months and their caregivers enjoy stories — songs — and movement without needing to register.  Downtown State College
  • Today, the State College Police Department hosted its second Coffee and Conversations event as part of National Coffee with a Cop Day, inviting residents to connect with officers over coffee. Chief John Gardner said he hopes the event continues and that it helps build trust — a key step toward changing perceptions of law enforcement.  WTAJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A couple who remained anonymous gave a $50,000 donation to Penn State Smeal College of Business to boost career readiness as job searches change in today’s world—this gift helped fund additional sections of a career course and speaker fees this fall. Director Ashley Rippey said the donation will equip more students with the skills needed for a competitive job market.  Penn State
  • A Penn State research team is developing smart windows that use a unique polymer to block sunlight and lower energy costs for heating and cooling in buildings—this design addresses the up to 30% energy loss caused by traditional windows.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s 2025 Homecoming Week will begin on Oct. 5 and run until Oct. 11, featuring events across State College that lead up to a football game against Northwestern at Beaver Stadium. The week will include a block party on Allen Street, a parade on Oct. 10, and other community festivities—highlighting the theme 'Find the Glory in Your Story.'  Penn State
  • Brian Dreckshage and Suzanne Watson have committed $500,000 plus an extra $45,000 supplement to endow the Brian J. Dreckshage Scholarship—helping Missouri undergraduates studying supply chain and information systems bridge the tuition gap at Penn State Smeal.  Penn State
  • Penn State alumna Lakeysha Graças de Deus spent a year in Angola researching education challenges and leading projects to improve school conditions. Now a Georgetown Law student, she will share her experience at the Schwartz Fellow Symposium on October 10—highlighting her commitment to creating educational opportunities.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, residents in Benner Township filed an appeal against a proposed RV park that would offer 100 campsites near Bellefonte Airport due to concerns about more traffic, noise and safety risks—especially for the nearby elementary school—with previous proposals also raising similar issues.  WTAJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Patients have experienced delays and coding errors at UPMC due to the launch of its new electronic health record system—EPIC—which began installation last weekend in central and western Pa, and the system changeover may require manual fixes.  WTAJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • After falling to Oregon last Saturday, Penn State prepares for its longest road trip to face UCLA in the Rose Bowl on Saturday, October 4th at 12:30 p.m.—the Nittany Lions will try to even the all-time series as UCLA remains winless this season.  StateCollege.com
  • Today, No. 5 Penn State men’s hockey starts its season opener in a top-15 game against No. 14 Arizona State in Tempe — the team returns key scorers and adds seven transfer skaters after a Frozen Four run. The game airs at 10 p.m. ET today and they will play Arizona State again at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.  Daily Collegian
