ECONOMY NEWS

  • Peoples Natural Gas is urging customers to apply for heating help through the Dollar Energy Fund, which will open Oct. 1 and offer one-time grants up to $500 to households that meet income guidelines or have gas service in danger; applications can be submitted online + by phone. The company also offers a Customer Assistance Program for reduced monthly payments and emergency repairs.  WTAJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michael Yatauro from Penn State Brandywine and University Park student Arnav Pandey are using AI to study if exact timing or a bit of human feel makes drumming sound better. They use a tool called Moises — and they are running tests on drum beats that may lead to more natural drum machine sounds in the future.  Penn State
  • Penn State provides many career services and networking events to help students find internships—these resources include large career fairs, online platforms, and college-specific guidance that prepare students for their careers. The guide recommends using these tools to build confidence and secure meaningful opportunities.  Onward State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at Penn State found that US homes using electric space heating and efficient appliances used less energy than those with natural gas systems—data from a 2020 survey showed modern heat pumps deliver more heat per unit of energy. The team said that switching to electric systems helped lower energy use and utility bills.  Penn State
  • Researchers at Penn State studied tomato plant leaves to see how their microbiome works against bacterial speck. They found strong populations of Xanthomonas and Pseudomonas which may suppress the disease and guide future treatment options.  Penn State

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • State College Planning Commission reviewed final plans for The George apartment building on South Burrowes Street; the project will replace two existing rental properties with a five-story, 20-unit building that includes two income-based inclusionary apartments — it also features a two-level parking garage with 50 spaces, EV charging conduit, and a small courtyard, while construction timing remains unscheduled.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State men’s hockey announced it will play its first outdoor game at Beaver Stadium on January 31 after moving the doubleheader with Michigan State to begin on January 30 at Pegula Ice Arena—game times and broadcast details will be announced later.  Onward State
  • Penn State announced its Homecoming game against Northwestern on Oct. 11 will kick off at 3:30 p.m. and be broadcast on FOX Sports 1. This marks the fourth time the team will start an afternoon game this season.  StateCollege.com
  • Coach James Franklin said after Saturday's loss to Oregon that Penn State struggled on first downs—leading to many third-down challenges—and that the team will work on fixing its plays ahead of the road trip to UCLA. He also stressed helping Drew Allar improve his game after recent inconsistency.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State alumna Destiny Rodriguez joined the New York Jets personnel operations team this past summer and prepared for her first regular season game using skills from her recreation, park and tourism management studies —she now supports scouting, analytics and travel scheduling for the team.  Penn State
  • Freshman hockey phenom Gavin McKenna impresses coaches and teammates at Penn State with elite skills and a team-first attitude after coming from the Canadian junior system and adapting to living on his own. The 17-year-old top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft will play his first home game this weekend against Arizona State — a debut that has local fans eager to see him in action.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State women’s volleyball player Kennedy Martin was named Big Ten Player of the Week after she hit .348 with seven kills per set in two matches at Rec Hall—her career-high 34 kills against UCLA marked her second weekly honor this season.  Onward State
  • At Monday's Penn State men's hockey Media Day, head coach Guy Gadowsky and players shared plans for the upcoming season—highlighting top recruit Gavin McKenna, a new leadership group, and updates on injuries as the team prepares to face Arizona State on Friday, October 3 at 9 p.m. Meanwhile, two goaltenders are set to compete for the starting role while sophomore forward Keaton Peters will miss the season and sophomore defenseman Cade Christenson is expected to return after Christmas.  Onward State
