COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Mark Lutheran Church, located at 850 Snydertown Road in Howard, will hold a Blessing of Pets and Animals at 6 p.m. on Oct.2 under the church pavilion — pet owners may bring their pets or photos and donate to Centre County PAWS.  StateCollege.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • David Crowley has led the Centre County public defender office since 1989 and handled nearly 3,000 cases in his long career while teaching young lawyers. He works with new tools like video evidence and treatment courts—keeping the office ready for changes in the law.  StateCollege.com
  • Online local news publisher Tom Sofield testified today at a Pennsylvania House committee hearing on HB 1291— a proposed bill that critics say would limit digital public notices to legacy print newspapers. Sofield warned the bill would preserve a print newspaper monopoly that could raise costs for taxpayers.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Penn State defense held the Oregon Ducks to 17 regulation points while the offense struggled to get going, and the team lost 30-24 in overtime; players said they will work to learn from the loss—hoping to improve in future games.  StateCollege.com
  • After a double-overtime loss to Oregon, Penn State’s offensive coordinator Kotelnicki made calls that hurt the offense and forced hard third downs for quarterback Allar—his fake toss and few short passes showed problems in the plan—leaving the team to struggle for yards.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State Women's Soccer ended a three-game winless streak by beating Northwestern 2-1 on Sunday at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium—Amelia White scored early and a second goal later while Northwestern pulled one back. The team will have six days to prepare before they travel to Piscataway for a game on October 4.  Onward State
  • On Sunday, No-15 Penn State lost to unranked UCLA 3-1 at Rec Hall, with Kennedy Martin tallying a career-high 34 kills. The Nittany Lions will face No-1 Nebraska on Friday, October 3 at 8- p.m. on FOX.  Onward State
  • Keaton Peters, a sophomore forward for Penn State Men's Hockey, announced on Friday via team social media that he will miss the entire 2025-26 season due to a knee injury sustained weeks ago—he will take a medical redshirt to maintain three years of eligibility once he recovers.  Onward State
  • Fans gathered early Saturday at Old Main Lawn to display creative signs during College GameDay to taunt Oregon—each sign adding a unique twist to the spirited event. The day ended with a 30—24 loss to Oregon at Beaver Stadium as supporters celebrated their playful creativity.  Onward State
  • After a dramatic loss to a top-10 opponent, coach James Franklin said he takes full responsibility for his team's 4-21 record and must find ways to win crucial games. He made his remarks after the game to address criticisms of struggling in big matchups—Franklin insists on facing his challenges head-on.  Daily Collegian
