CULTURE NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Stuckeman School will host Stockholm-based designer Peter Lynch at 4:00 p.m. on Oct. 1 for his lecture 'Fragments and Coherence'—held in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space and livestreamed via Zoom.  Penn State
  • Harmit Singh Malik will present Marker Lectures on evolutionary biology at Penn State, with one talk on Oct 14 titled 'Molecular Arms Races Between Host and Viral Genomes' and another on Oct 15 addressing genetic conflicts during meiosis — both scheduled for 3 p.m. in Foster Auditorium at the Paterno Library and sponsored by the Eberly College of Science.  Penn State
  • Starting Oct 15, Penn State University Libraries will offer four online workshops on R and RStudio to teach research reproducibility and data management on Zoom—registration is required and sessions are for graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty and staff.  Penn State
  • Penn State has launched the Innovation Lions Award to honor individuals and offices that help commercialize research by making key introductions and tracking licensing deals or startup formations. Honorees will be recognized at a gala scheduled for March 2026—this award supports efforts to advance technology transfer.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veterans in Central PA will be able to get drive-thru flu shots from the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center starting Sept. 27—clinics will be held in State College, Johnstown, Altoona, Huntingdon, Indiana and DuBois, with walk-in hours at the Altoona VA Medical Center available until Nov. 25.  WTAJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a loss to Wisconsin, Penn State women's soccer will play an 8 p.m. game today against Illinois and a 2 p.m. match Sunday against Northwestern—each game key for the team to improve its ranking.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State Football is preparing for the upcoming White Out game against the Oregon Ducks as veteran King Mack competes for the starting safety position next to Zakee Wheatley. Coach Franklin praised Mack for his strong practice work & improved football IQ while noting that freshman Antoine Belgrave-Shorter is also in the running.  Onward State
  • Pepsi and Penn State are offering 1,000 limited-edition White Out cans for fans to win through a sweepstakes that runs until October 12, tied to the game against Oregon. Pepsi will host a pregame event in Happy Valley—giving away products and offering samplings—before the game on Saturday.  Onward State
  • Penn State Transportation Services announced parking, traffic and transit changes for the football game against Oregon at Beaver Stadium on Sept. 27; premium gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and public gates at 5:30 p.m. Fans must plan for road closures, parking reassignments and adjusted bus routes near ESPN’s College GameDay area — University Park lots open at 8 a.m. and alternate parking is recommended.  Penn State
  • No. 8 Penn State women’s hockey will open its season today at 6 p.m. at home against No. 9 St. Lawrence and will play again Friday at 3 p.m. The team hopes to end a two-game losing streak by using its home ice advantage and key players like Kennedy Wilson and Taylor Lum — a focus that may shift the series in its favor.  Daily Collegian
  • The Penn State women’s volleyball team will start its Big Ten title defense campaign Friday night after a 6-4 nonconference record that saw losses to four ranked opponents—coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said the team learned from early struggles and is ready to face USC and UCLA at home.  Onward State
  • Three former PSU football stars Christian Hackenberg, Michael Mauti, and Jason Cabinda will sign bottles of Whiteout Tequila Blanco at Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection, located at 1536 N. Atherton St., at noon on Friday, Sept 26 in State College — bottles will cost $39.99 and only store purchases are eligible for signing.  WTAJ
