CULTURE NEWS

  • Reality TV stars Nic Vansteenberghe and Austin Shephard will appear in State College in the next few weeks to give fans a chance to dance and party with them. Vansteenberghe will perform at Stage West on September 24 at 9 p.m. for a 21+ event, and Shephard will appear at The Basement on October 16 at 9 p.m. for an 18+ event.  Onward State

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced that SCI Rockview and the Quehanna Motivational Boot Camp will close over the next four months, affecting over 800 employees who will transfer to other facilities. Local businesses like DelGrosso’s Park may face economic challenges if families leave the region—impact could ripple through the local economy.  WTAJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State is joining Abbott’s blood drive contest with the Big Ten schools, where the winning school will earn $1 million to boost community health — the competition runs through Dec. 5. This week, Penn State will compete against Oregon in a mini challenge with results announced during the White Out game on Sept. 27, and campus drives begin today at Bryce Jordan Center.  Penn State

  • The No. 13 Penn State Women’s Volleyball team swept Central Michigan 3-0 on Sunday with Kennedy Martin leading with 16 kills — closing their nonconference schedule and setting up a conference opener against USC on September 26.  Onward State
  • No. 16 Penn State field hockey lost to Lafayette 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday—Penn State nearly closed out the win until a last-minute penalty corner tied the game and forced two overtime periods with no goals before Lafayette prevailed. The Nittany Lions will face Michigan State at 4 p.m. on Friday in a Big Ten matchup.  Onward State
  • In a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin on Sunday, Kaitlyn MacBean took a season-high nine shots and scored Penn State’s only goal early in the game; coach Erica Dambach said the team struggled with individual play + the loss left Penn State with a 1-1-1 in-conference record.  Daily Collegian
  • Junior midfielder Natalie Freeman has become a key player for Penn State field hockey as she improved from her debut season to her current junior year—she scored key goals in wins against Indiana and Lafayette and helped the team with her speed and playmaking.   • The ESPN team is calling on plans to lock in a celebrity guest picker by Thursday for College GameDay, which will air on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for the pre-game show and 7:30 p.m. for the game between No. 3 Penn State and No. 6 Oregon — a tradition that continues on campus.  StateCollege.com
  • In a match for THON on Sunday afternoon, Penn State women's soccer lost to Wisconsin after missing a vital penalty kick while Wisconsin’s Erin Connolly scored two goals—Penn State will travel to Demirjian Park at 8:00 p.m. Thursday to face Illinois.  Daily Collegian
