COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Community members gathered on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Allen Street Gates in downtown State College to mark National Constitution Day and call on Gov. Shapiro to end state collaboration with ICE. The vigil ended after 30 minutes, and local organizers vowed to keep pushing for changes—focusing on stopping data sharing with ICE. StateCollege.com
- ➤ Pop Up Ave— a semiannual maker and vintage outdoor market— will return to downtown State College on Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature 42 vendors, including returning favorites and newcomers selling vintage items, jewelry, and handmade ceramics at the 200 block of South Allen Street. - ➤ Tax credits for electric vehicles and home energy upgrades are expiring soon — EV credits end Sept. 30 while most home credits finish Dec. 31. State College residents are urged to complete home assessments and act quickly to secure their savings. WTAJ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rebecca Krisher — a global senior director at Genus plc — has been named head of Penn State’s Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural Sciences, effective Oct.6. She will succeed interim head Lisa Holden and use her extensive background from Purdue, Illinois and other institutions to lead new research and teaching initiatives that benefit the community and local animal agriculture. - ➤ CPI carpentry students at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology in Pleasant Gap earned the PA Builders Association’s 2024 Community Project of the Year Award for building a showcase entry at the Home Expo — the project gave them hands-on training they can use for real work. Guided by instructor Marty Crane and local builders, the students solved real challenges like ordering mistakes and portable construction as they prepared for future careers. StateCollege.com
- ➤ This summer, 11 Penn State students took part in a six-week program called Spanish Language and Mexican Culture in Puebla, Mexico led by Daniel Sanguino and Damián Solano Escolano—students stayed with local families and went on weekend trips to learn Spanish and local traditions. Penn State

- ➤ The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections submitted its final report recommending the closure of SCI Rockview and Quehanna Boot Camp to Gov. Shapiro and the state legislature today — a move that could save up to $100 million. Officials say affected employees will be given new job offers at other facilities and inmates will be gradually transferred to centers that best meet their needs. ABC 23

- ➤ After winning the Dolan Duals and Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, the Penn State women's cross country team moved from 15th to 14th in the USTFCCCA poll on September 16th — boosted by strong runs from Florence Caron and Liliah Gordon. - ➤ No. 16 Penn State is on a four-game win streak after wins over Bucknell and Kent State. The team will face Maryland today at 5 p.m.—followed by Lafayette at noon Sunday on the road as they aim to strengthen their chance for a Big Ten Tournament spot. Daily Collegian
- ➤ Penn State men's basketball released its full conference schedule, with conference play beginning at Indiana on Dec. 9 and a home game against Michigan State on Dec. 13. The schedule also includes games at Illinois on Jan. 3, Michigan on Jan. 6, and trips to Washington, Oregon, and Philadelphia — while tipoff times and TV details will be announced later — as part of the Big Ten lineup. - ➤ Kennedy Martin led No. 13 Penn State at Rec Hall on Wednesday as she recorded 16 kills to tie Pittsburgh’s top kill count in a match the Lions lost in four sets — coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said the team will review game film and practice tomorrow to improve focus.
