BUSINESS NEWS

  • A prefabricated building was dropped off at Hills Plaza on South Atherton Street to house the local area’s first 7 Brew drive-thru coffee shop, which Brew Team Group plans to open mid-to-late November— the shop will serve coffee, energy drinks and other beverages through a dual-lane drive-thru system.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum will host the Boalsburg Renaissance Faire on Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.—the event will feature live music, interactive games, axe-throwing, carriage rides, crafts vendors and a petting zoo. Admission is $10 per person while museum tours cost $5 and children 2 and under are free.  WTAJ
  • Penn State is hosting a busy week of cultural events from today until Sept. 25, with shows like the 10th annual Harvest Fest at Ross Student Farm, the circus show The Great DuBois at Penn State York, and the Great Insect Fair at Snider Agricultural Arena. Other events include concerts, lectures and art exhibits on campus and in downtown State College—giving many options for community engagement.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State will host the 'Fair Summit: Futures of AI in Rural Education' on September 24 at University Park—bringing together about 50 policymakers, educators, and tech leaders to explore ways to help rural schools adapt to AI-driven change and develop new policy ideas. The forum will feature keynote talks, panel discussions, and group sessions, and its recommendations will be shared publicly after the event.  Penn State
  • The award winning newscast Centre County Report produced by Penn State students in the Bellisario College of Communications has expanded its reach in Pennsylvania with a media partnership that streams the program on WTAJ-TV—broadening its audience in central Pennsylvania. The program has earned multiple national awards, including an Edward R. Murrow Award.  Penn State
  • Penn State faculty are invited to apply for the Communication, Science and Society Initiative funding opportunity focused on human—environment interaction, where interdisciplinary teams will research topics like air quality and invasive species. Proposals will be accepted starting Oct. 1 on a rolling basis until funds are depleted and awarded projects will run through June 2027.  Penn State
  • State College Area School District’s annual homecoming parade returns today with changes set to improve safety—only school-sponsored groups and fixed flatbed trucks under 40 feet may participate, starting at 5:45 p.m. at the O’Bryan Lane and Westerly Parkway intersection and traveling through Holmes-Foster and Greentree before ending with a pep rally at the State High South Track complex around 7 p.m.  StateCollege.com
  • Stuckeman School in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State launches its fall lecture series on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. with a talk by Paradigma Ariadné, an interdisciplinary design studio from Budapest that focuses on architecture, urban design and interior projects—this free event is held in the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space and can also be joined via Zoom.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Corrections announced on September 17th it recommends closing SCI Rockview — a facility in Bellefonte housing over 2,100 inmates — and Quehanna Boot Camp in Karthaus, with a final decision expected by the end of this week. State Representative Paul Takac and local community members oppose the closures, saying they will hurt local jobs and businesses.  WTAJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • University Health Services has announced that student flu vaccine clinics will begin on Oct. 2 at the 204 Student Health Center with additional dates scheduled through early December. Students are urged to pre-book appointments using myUHS and bring required documents to keep the PSU community healthy — walk-ins are accepted as space allows.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles held a Zoom call and said freshman linebacker Alex Tatsch may get more playing time as Penn State works to fix its third and fourth down defense — he also previewed the game against Oregon on Sept. 27 and noted the team will focus on being in the right spots to counter a strong offense.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State is using its bye week to fix issues on offense and defense — the team is working on new receiver chemistry and speeding up plays in practice ahead of the White Out game on September 27. These improvements aim to boost their performance as they prepare for a tough matchup.  WTAJ
