  • Mimi Barash Coppersmith, a businesswoman & philanthropist who founded Town&Gown, died at 92 after a long career of community leadership in State College. She served on the Penn State Board of Trustees and supported many local projects.  StateCollege.com
  • ACRES Project held its fourth annual Amazing Race at Tussey Mountain on Sunday, September 14 with 15 teams competing in challenges like flyswatter golf and upside-down frisbee water carrying to benefit neurodivergent adults in Centre County—teams Omega Alpha Phi and Nat’s Crew won their divisions while Jake’s Team led fundraising to earn a Hilton Head stay.  StateCollege.com

  • Mosul Grill has opened at 434 E. College Ave, replacing Jimmy John's, and is run entirely by the Alshekhkder family — the restaurant serves fresh, authentic Iraqi dishes like beef kebabs and lamb shank made from family recipes passed down since they arrived from Iraq in 2011.  Onward State

CULTURE NEWS

  • Penn State's Center for Black Digital Research and Africana Research Center will host a symposium honoring writer and activist Frances Harper from Sept. 19 to Sept. 21 at the University—featuring a panel discussion and a dance performance on opening night. The event marks the 200th anniversary of her birth—inviting the public to help transcribe her works with most activities free and open to all.  Penn State
  • Penn State will hold its Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 10 and 11 on University Park with an ice cream social on Friday followed by a parade along campus roads leading to the Nittany Lion Shrine. The event will include a football game against Northwestern and a Guard the Lion Shrine tradition with live music and free food — uniting a global alumni base of more than 800,000.  Penn State

  • Penn State's Nature and Art Rx program will launch Kick-off Week from Sept. 22 to Sept. 27—offering art, nature and wellness events to help student mental and physical well-being. The initiative, a joint effort by Student Affairs, Penn State Outreach and the College of Arts and Architecture, will feature workshops, guided walks and yoga sessions for students.  Penn State
  • Penn State Prime will host its 10th Annual Prime Branding Panel at the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Atrium in the Business Building on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. where industry experts and a distinguished alumni moderator will join students for discussions on marketing and branding + a reception to follow.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State College Borough Council is reviewing a new zoning code that updates old rules for housing, parking, and business areas. The council will meet from Sept. 15 to Oct. 20 and hold a public hearing on March 2 before the changes are adopted—aiming to make town planning clearer for everyone.  StateCollege.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the Center for Medical Innovation awarded $200,000 in grants to four research teams through the Bridges to Translation and Translational Science Pilot Funding Programs. The projects include a mixed reality treatment for phantom limb pain, a study linking untreated insomnia with Alzheimer’s, a wearable sensor for ALS, and smart vending machines for public health screening—work that will help gather crucial data for future funding.  Penn State

  • After beating Villanova 52-6 to start 3-0, Penn State football is on a bye week as the team works to fix its offense and lean on a strong defense ahead of its White Out game with Oregon in two weeks.  Onward State
  • Penn State punter Gabe Nwosu — who earned the starting job over Riley Thompson — was added to the Ray Guy Award watch list on Monday, earning him national attention. Through three games, he has punted five times and all his kicks have landed inside the 20-yard line — averaging 48.6 yards per attempt — which marks a strong start this season.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women's volleyball dropped one spot to No. 13 in the AVCA poll on Monday after they swept Bucknell and finished the week with a 4-3 record following star setter Izzy Starck's departure. The team will face No. 5 Pitt tomorrow at 7 p.m.—an in-state match that could boost their season momentum.  Onward State
  • Penn State has won its first three nonconference games and will host Oregon after the bye week. Transfer receivers Peña, Hudson and Ross have shined while quarterback Drew Allar has struggled with turnovers and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has improved the defense even as cornerback Antoine Belgrave-Shorter has seen less playing time - signs that these changes may impact the next game.  Daily Collegian
