- ➤ The Student Committee for Defense and Solidarity held an anti-ICE protest downtown Thursday night in response to Penn State's alleged ties to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement—during the march to the Nittany Lion Inn a man in his 70s swung a stick and was removed by State College police amid a brief confrontation. - ➤ At Penn State’s University Park Campus, student groups set up 2977 American flags to honor lives lost on 9/11 — a memorial service was held Thursday at 5 p.m. on the Old Main steps, and the flag display will remain until Friday afternoon. ABC 23
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Sept. 5, the Eberly College of Science celebrated important milestones in the Department of Physics including the 70th anniversary of Erwin Müller’s first atomic observation and the 10th anniversary of the LIGO discovery of gravitational waves. The college will host public tours today and later in the fall—letting visitors view historic equipment and modern devices in Osmond Lab and the Millenium Science Complex. Penn State
- ➤ Donovan Fairhurst, a Penn State senior in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management, worked 35 shows this summer with The Weeknd’s tour after earning a trial role and designing the artist’s onstage mask — he now hopes to join the tour’s Latin American leg in the spring. Onward State
- ➤ NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and Penn State scientists discovered tiny red dots that may be objects called black hole stars—big balls of hot gas lit by supermassive black holes that pull in matter fast. The team used nearly 60 hours of telescope time in 2024 to study light from distant galaxies, a finding that may help explain how early galaxies grew. Penn State
