COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Aug 28, about 120 Penn State Master Gardeners and other volunteers from Extension, the College of Agricultural Sciences and the National Park Service weeded, pruned and prepared the Flight 93 National Memorial grounds in Somerset County—this work readies the site for the 24th annual remembrance on Sept 11. - ➤ Centre Helps celebrated the opening of its new headquarters at 406 S. Pugh St.—a renovated former fraternity house—on Wednesday with local leaders as part of a $3.2 million project led by the State College Redevelopment Authority. The project will add affordable housing units in Phase 2 next year while expanding vital crisis support services in our community. StateCollege.com

- ➤ Bubba’s Eggs, Steaks and Shakes will open at 131 S. Garner St. in State College and carry on the diner tradition in the historic Silk City Diner — previously home to Baby’s Burgers & Shakes and Oeuf Boeuf et Bacon — and the restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with shakes. - ➤ Penn State is hosting a range of cultural events from today through Sept. 18, including Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, museum extended hours, and performances by Eddie Griffin and the PA Chamber Orchestra. - ➤ Doctoral candidate Yuhui Jeong will lead a free seminar on Sept. 17 at noon in 157 Hosler Building to explain how a Massachusetts food waste ban may affect housing prices near landfills. Her talk will present research findings on changes in property values—evidence that environmental policies can influence local markets. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State campuses will honor Constitution Day with events on Sept. 17 that feature historical displays, voter registration, and panel discussions on civic rights—organizers aim to educate students about the U.S. Constitution and democratic responsibilities. - ➤ Penn State began the LEAP program in summer 1995 to help new students adjust to campus life—over 30 years it has grown to use academic coaching; this summer, 1,750 incoming students joined 75 prides and worked with 25 peer success coaches to build key college skills. Penn State
- ➤ Sarma Pisupati, director of Penn State’s Center for Critical Minerals, will give a free talk on Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. in 112 Walker Building that explains how waste can be turned into rare earth elements — a process that may boost our supply for clean energy and advanced materials. Penn State
- ➤ On Tuesday, September 4th, SJP held an educational session in the Business Building where students learned about the Israel-Hamas conflict and its effect on Gaza—using facts from groups like the UN. - ➤ The League of Women Voters of Centre County will host Municipal Election Candidates' Night at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the State College Borough Council Chambers—243 S. Allen St. where local candidates will answer questions from the community in a politically neutral format. Voters can send questions by email until Oct. 7 or ask them at the event, and the session will be streamed live and archived on the LWVCC website. StateCollege.com
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Penn Highlands State College will host a free women's health event on Sept. 19 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 239 Colonnade Boulevard + physicians will cover topics such as arthritis, healthy sleep, and cancer care while giving away popular name-brand prizes to registered attendees. StateCollege.com

- ➤ Penn State wrestling is set to start its 2025-26 season as preseason favorites after InterMat ranked the team No. 1 in team, dual, and projected tournament rankings with wrestlers in nine of ten weight classes (the 141-pound slot remains unfilled). Their schedule includes a non-conference match (November 14 vs Oklahoma) that could serve as the season opener. Onward State
- ➤ Penn State women’s soccer moved up to No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll even though they lost to Virginia last week after beating Liberty by 3 to 0. They will play Maryland in their first conference game today at 6 p.m. at Jeffrey Field with the game streamed on BTN+. Onward State
- ➤ At Penn State, defensive end Zuriah Fisher did individual drills on Aug. 29 as he worked to recover from a long injury—he told his coach he felt ready for the season opener but sat on the bench against Nevada.
