CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The restored Boogersburg Schoolhouse—originally built in 1877 and closed in 1952—is now open for tours in Centre County and welcomes visitors who want to learn about its history. Over $200,000 was spent on renovations to replace every piece with antique materials—ensuring an authentic look. WTAJ
- ➤ Penn State is marking National Hispanic Heritage Month from mid-September to October with events that honor Hispanic culture—these include the Happy Valley Latin Festival on Sept. 20 in State College and other gatherings that share music, food, and learning. - ➤ Amanda Hellman, who has directed the Vanderbilt University Museum of Art since 2022, has been named the new director of the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State and will begin her role effective Jan. 2, 2026 (she brings extensive curatorial experience from her previous work). Penn State

- ➤ Students can apply for THON 2026 committee member positions by submitting their completed applications before 11:59 p.m. on September 18— the event involves 16 committees under four groups and is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Onward State
- ➤ The Presidential Leadership Academy will host the inaugural James Jimirro Open for Debate Series on Sept. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the HUB-Robeson Center on University Park campus; the event will feature discussions on media bias, climate politics, and immigration with speakers Molly Jong-Fast and Scott Jennings—all while tickets remain limited. - ➤ Researchers at Penn State and Yale have developed a new method—spVelo—that uses machine learning to measure RNA velocity by combining spatial clues and batch data so scientists can better predict how cells will change. The method, described in Genome Biology, may provide important insights into gene regulation and cell specialization. Penn State
