COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Denise Sullivan has been named executive director of Leadership Centre County—she served as interim director for the past year and will now lead the organization that recently named new board officers, celebrated the Class of 2025 graduation, and completed enrollment for the Class of 2026. The group will host a reception for the incoming class on Sept. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mountain View Country Club.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The News Lab at Penn State received a $200,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to expand its programs and create a fellowship for first-generation, transfer, and low-income journalism students. The grant will boost paid student positions and enable more local government meeting coverage—supporting journalism careers and enhancing retention.  Penn State
  • Penn State researcher Guha Manogharan was awarded $1.6 million by DARPA to improve the testing and certification process for 3D-printed metal parts through a subcontract with Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio— his work aims to help companies use additive manufacturing faster and more safely. The project will focus on reducing certification time for metal parts in defense and aerospace applications.  Penn State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from Penn State, the USGS and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission found that invasive flathead catfish now top the Susquehanna River food web as native fish change what they eat; the study used tests to show that these catfish may disrupt local fisheries—raising concerns about the river's balance.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday night, Penn State men's soccer beat Mercyhurst 5-0 at Jeffrey Field in Happy Valley—delivering the largest win margin in over a decade. The game set a season-high with five goals by the home team.  Onward State
  • Penn State’s Nittany Lions will face FIU today at noon at Beaver Stadium — the game is broadcast on Big Ten Network and tickets are available for under $15.  Daily Collegian
  • No. 18 Penn State field hockey beat Delaware 3-2 in double overtime on Friday — Ella Jennes scored the game-winning goal after Joji Purdy scored twice. The team will play St. Joseph’s on Sunday, September 7 at 12 p.m.  Onward State
