CRIME NEWS

  • A 21-year-old Jefferson County man was arrested after he stabbed another man in the neck during a roadside argument on Sunday in Philipsburg and now faces charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault—witnesses said he threatened the victim before the altercation.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • President Neeli Bendapudi delivered a video message to start the new fall semester at Penn State—she said the term will let students learn in labs, on sports fields, and in clubs while the community strives for excellence in research, athletics, and service projects.  Penn State
  • Penn State is kicking off Fall Welcome Week today with class photos and a MoneyCounts webinar at the Henderson Building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 1 p.m.—later this week, students will enjoy an encore show at the Schwab Auditorium, a football tailgate and concert with Quavo, free ice cream to learn about composting, and Donuts with Deans on Friday at 4 Henderson Building.  Onward State
  • Penn State offers a range of resources and services for students and employees impacted by sexual misconduct—such as confidential counseling and immediate medical support—and urges those affected to contact the Office of Sexual Misconduct Reporting or the Title IX coordinator for help.  Penn State
  • The Institute of Energy and the Environment has invited Penn State faculty involved in energy or environmental research to the Energy and Environmental Faculty Forum and Reception on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the HUB-Robeson Center in Heritage Hall+faculty will join breakout sessions on key research themes and then enjoy a reception with light refreshments.  Penn State
  • Penn State researchers discovered that sugars and maleic acid act as messengers to tell plant pores when to open for breathing and eating — tests on Arabidopsis and fava beans confirmed the role of these chemicals in plant energy use.  Penn State

  • Penn State Athletics opened the renovated Greenberg Indoor Sports Complex for over 800 student athletes on Monday. The $31.9M project added 38,000 square feet of new space including a Performance Dining Center (with a full-service kitchen and communal dining area) and a Wellness and Recovery Center (with a hydrotherapy pool and recovery tools).  StateCollege.com
  • State College girls tennis swept Mid-Penn Commonwealth rival Mifflin County on Monday as key players Joanna Liu, Purvi Narayanan and Kazie Dingwell each won their singles matches—helping the team remain undefeated.  PennLive
  • Former Nittany Lions showed strong NFL preseason highlights as Chop Robinson of the Dolphins sacked quarterback John Wolford in his 11 snaps and KJ Hamler of the Bills caught a 30-yard pass during their wins; other ex-Penn State players such as Kobe King are fighting for a spot on a 53-man roster—coaches are still evaluating their performance.  Daily Collegian
