COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the Centre County Grange Fair, local youth in 4-H display handmade projects, animal exhibits, and other efforts to build leadership and hands-on skills. Teen Council President Jillian Anderson said the fair helps kids learn valuable organization and time management skills—preparing them for future challenges.  StateCollege.com
  • The 133rd annual Central District Volunteer Fireman’s Convention began on August 14th and continues today in Osceola Mills—fire stations from 26 counties gather at Columbia Fire Company for a battle of the barrel, a grand parade and live bands celebrating their hard work.  ABC 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gorinto Productions is bringing live national and international music to State College by using Manny’s Performance Space at 101 Hiester St and hosting a three-day festival—its CSA-style membership program, Secret Planet, helps cover touring costs for visiting acts. The initiative offers the community a unique chance to enjoy diverse live shows and cultural exchange.  StateCollege.com
  • On August 20, a free movie for kids titled The Wild Robot will be shown at The State Theatre from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm—neighbors are asked to avoid parking in the Schlow Library lot.  Downtown State College

  • Penn State researchers said older siblings and friends help kids stay safe when playing games like Roblox and Minecraft. The study, which interviewed 26 children, found that talking with trusted peers helps them learn to avoid scams and risky behaviors—an insight that can guide parents.  Penn State
  • Penn State doctoral candidate Adam Smerigan is testing a new method to extract valuable rare earth elements from phosphogypsum, a toxic waste byproduct stored in large lakes. He works with Professor Rui Shi using peptide technology to improve element separation + support a more sustainable circular economy.  Penn State
  • The Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing has received funding through the Eugene Washington Engagement Award program to boost patient-centered research in nursing homes—this project, led by Liza Behrens in partnership with AgingIN, will build a community advisory board and offer training and online resources to support care.   • Bridget Reheard, a Lancaster native, has been named the student marshal for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ summer commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. today at the Bryce Jordan Center—she will graduate with bachelor degrees in geosciences and wildlife and fisheries science.  Penn State
  • Penn State researchers have created a free online tool—Veteran Transition Screener—that helps veteran-serving groups match each veteran’s unique challenges with tailored support as they move from military to civilian life. The tool uses data from modern veterans to offer advice on work, health, education and finances.  Penn State

  • Forward Braden Horton announced his commitment to Penn State on Instagram Friday after a record season with 112 points for Shattuck St. Mary’s 15U AAA team—he will join the NTDP U.S. National U17 Team later this year and start at Penn State in 2027.  Daily Collegian
