CRIME NEWS

  • A Centre County man from Boggs Township was arrested Tuesday night near Milesburg after a standoff when he threatened a woman with a gun; he now faces terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment charges with a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 20.  StateCollege.com
  • A Bellefonte man named Joshua Lynn Resides, 41, was arrested after a multi-hour standoff with police—following a domestic dispute in which he allegedly threatened his partner with a gun—and he is now held at Centre County Prison with a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 20.  WTAJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Invent Penn State’s NSF I—Corps Short Course is accepting applications for a free virtual program that will run from Friday, Sept. 12 through Friday, Sept. 26 to help researchers test startup ideas through customer interviews and assignments. Applicants must complete a prep mini-course by Friday, Sept. 5 and commit to 5—10 hours a week during the course.  Penn State
  • Penn State will hold its summer commencement on Aug. 16 at the Bryce Jordan Center, where around 2,974 diplomas will be awarded to students in various degree programs—ceremonies will be livestreamed and include the Schreyer Honors College Medals Ceremony starting at 8 a.m.  Penn State

  • At Ag Progress Days in Centre County, Governor Shapiro spoke to lawmakers and agriculture leaders on Wednesday about both progress made through state investments and challenges like tariffs, rising prices, and workforce issues—he noted that the ag innovation fund has seen high demand and promised further funding. He stressed Pennsylvania’s commitment to supporting new technology and the next generation of farm workers.  WTAJ

  • Penn State football players Zane Durant and Vega Ioane were added to the Lombardi Award watch list after officials announced the selection Monday—Durant enters his senior season as one of the nation's top defensive tackles—while Ioane is recognized as a Preseason All-America candidate.  Onward State
  • The Penn State women’s soccer team will play No. 4 Duke today in their season opener while the team looks to build on a 4-1-1 edge in past meetings — Duke’s redshirt junior forward Kat Rader is set to lead her team as both sides vie for a close win.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men’s hockey announced nine new recruits for the 2025-26 season including standout freshman Gavin McKenna — who registered 129 points in 56 games — and forward Shea Van Olm, who scored 49 goals with the Spokane Chiefs. The historic class also includes Luke Misa, Lev Katzin, Mac Gadowsky, Jackson Smith, Nolan Collins, Kevin Reidler and Josh Fleming, and will strengthen the team as the college hockey season approaches.  Daily Collegian
