ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 4, a 74-year-old State College bicyclist was hit by a truck on Lower Brush Valley Road in Potter Township when 28-year-old Kaleigh Jones of Spring Mills overtook her in a Ford F-150, and she was flown to Williamsport Hospital with serious head and lower body injuries. WTAJ

- ➤ The Happy Valley Maker Faire will debut this fall in Centre County with hands-on workshops and creative exhibits at Axemann Brewery on Sept. 20 and Sept. 21. Hosted by Discovery Space and The Rivet, the event will feature local makers and a shuttle service from noon to 4 p.m. — more details are coming soon. StateCollege.com

- ➤ Penn State Transportation Services announced that free parking for summer commencement ceremonies at the Bryce Jordan Center will be available at Stadium West and Jordan East on Saturday, Aug. 16—ADA parking spots are set aside and drive lane drop-offs are prohibited for safe pedestrian access. - ➤ Penn State University Libraries partners with public and academic libraries to offer free interlibrary loan services to all Pennsylvania residents—materials are delivered within three to five business days and faculty can use reciprocal borrowing programs. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State Smeal College of Business has launched the Propel Penn State Seed Fund to give undergraduates real hands-on experience in venture investing while supporting early-stage startups. The fund will start a Venture Capital Investment Practicum this fall (supported by alumni and corporate partners) and aims to raise $5 million (its fundraising goal) for future programs. Penn State

- ➤ Professor Ming Xiao at Penn State earned a two-year, $957,013 DoD grant to use drones in studying how warmer weather is melting Alaska’s permafrost and exposing dangerous waste from old military sites. The study will test a new method that may help predict risks from climate change + guide future safety measures. Penn State

- ➤ State College Borough announced parking changes and travel restrictions during move-in week to keep streets safe and free of congestion. The measures include one-way turns, lane closures and street shutdowns on Hetzel, East Calder, Highland, West College and H Alleys from August 16 to 23—parking limits in residential areas will be lifted for a few days to help ease the process. - ➤ Researchers at Penn State with colleagues at Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh have published a website that shows county-level details on how opioid settlement funds are spent in Pennsylvania. Nearly $390 million has been allocated to treatment, prevention and recovery programs — and the dashboard will track the funds' impact over time. Penn State

- ➤ Three Penn State women’s soccer players—Molly Martin, Kaitlyn MacBean, and Amelia White—were added to the Big Ten Players to Watch list. Martin, who played in every game last season, enters her redshirt junior season while MacBean, who scored 16 goals and tallied 34 points, and White, who recorded seven points in 21 games, begin their new seasons.
