COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local law enforcement and emergency responders will host two National Night Out events today in Centre County to build police-community partnerships—one event runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Giant Food Stores with free food and fun activities, and another in Bellefonte runs from 5 to 8 p.m. with a close-up look at emergency vehicles and community services.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Olivia Murphy-Sweet, the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award recipient, visited campus this spring with her parents—sharing her journey in agricultural education and global work with Field of Hope—with students in the international agriculture seminar. She leads Field of Hope to help smallholder farmers in Uganda and plans to expand her nonprofit work—aiming to build on her mission—with a future doctoral degree in international development.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State College Borough Council approved long-term lane restrictions and a sidewalk closure on West Beaver Ave along with an ADA-compliant walkway on South Atherton Street this fall for the demolition and construction of the nine-story Nittany Residence Club at 321 W. Beaver Ave, with demolition set to begin this month and construction starting later this fall. The plan will remove nine parking spaces and shift the eastbound lane into the metered parking area—ensuring a safe buffer from the construction zone—while the project is scheduled to complete in May 2027 and open in August 2027.  StateCollege.com
  • Drivers should expect delays on Route 322 between Boalsburg and Potters Mills this week as PennDOT crews repair a guard rail damaged in a crash and repaint road markings. Flaggers will assist traffic control Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday—drivers should allow extra travel time.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State football is ranked No. 3 in the preseason USA Today Coaches’ poll, marking its highest start since 1999—team officials said the ranking comes ahead of the season opener on Aug. 30 at Beaver Stadium against Nevada.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State has added three wide receiver transfers — Trebor Pena from Syracuse, Devonte Ross from Troy, and Kyron Hudson from USC — as fall camp sets the stage for the 2025 season. The players chose Penn State for the returning quarterback and team culture and said they are eager to learn the playbook and boost the offense.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State tight end Khalil Dinkins is set for a larger role in the 2025 season as he works to improve his pass-catching and mentoring skills—known for his elite blocking, the fifth-year player honed his receiving abilities during practice on August 2nd and now prepares to raise his impact on offense and leadership within the team.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State quarterback Drew Allar and running back Nick Singleton have been named to the Walter Camp Award watch list for best player in college football. The award will name ten semi-finalists in early November and three finalists in December—its winner will be announced live on ESPN on December 12.  Onward State
