CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two women, one from Punxsutawney and one from Clearfield, were charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals and misdemeanor cruelty to animals after allegedly abandoning a dog hit by a car on May 20 in Pine Township; the injured dog was taken to Metzgar Animal Hospital in State College — one woman reportedly said, 'Give me the felony charges. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ State College Area School District will use new security measures for the 2025-26 school year after an alleged school shooting plot in April led to a review of safety steps with help from law enforcement and community members. Secondary students will need to wear IDs, scan them upon entry, and face random searches while metal detectors may be used if there is reasonable suspicion—school board approved the policy on July 21. - ➤ Penn State women’s volleyball team, fresh off its eighth national championship, will begin its championship defense with two showcase events in August against Creighton and Kansas, with the first game on August 23 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They will open nine home games on September 5 against Kentucky—continuing a packed schedule that includes key matchups against Pittsburgh and other strong teams as they aim for a repeat title. - ➤ Today, Penn State kicked off its 2025 football season with the first full-squad preseason practice as players returned to campus after summer conditioning and worked with their position coaches—head coach James Franklin said the team is focused on changing its narrative and gearing up for the Aug. 30 opener against Nevada at Beaver Stadium, which is undergoing major updates.
