ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Roger Heverly, 59, died in an ATV accident on July 27 along the 600 block of Greens Run Road in Howard Township when emergency crews from Howard Fire Company, Bellefonte EMS and Mount Nittany Medical Center EMS responded and state police and the coroner's office are investigating the crash. - ➤ Penn State students in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory sift through radio telescope data to find pulsars—a type of star that sends out steady radio waves. The group gives research credit and trains members from different majors to filter out human-made noise and spot clear signals from space. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences launched the Land Grant Research Impact Fellows program to support faculty whose research tackles practical challenges in agriculture—four professors were named as the first fellows and will each receive $30,000 per year for three years. - ➤ A team of Penn State researchers led by Victor Pasko explained how strong electric fields in thunderclouds accelerated electrons that hit air molecules to produce X-rays and trigger lightning, according to a study published July 28 in the Journal of Geophysical Research+ They used a mathematical model to match cosmic ray effects and field observations+ which offers a full explanation for the chain reaction that starts lightning. - ➤ Former Penn State baseball pitcher Ryan DeSanto signed a contract with the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday after a strong season — he posted an 8-2 record and 3.96 ERA — and he was drafted in the 12th round of the MLB Draft. Daily Collegian
- ➤ After a Fiesta Bowl win on Dec. 31, 2024, head coach James Franklin said Penn State will focus on winning the national championship in 2025 by keeping most of its key players and experienced coaching staff—helping the team build on a solid offseason and a near-championship run last year.
