CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Michael Wayne Oglesby, 39, from Lock Haven is in custody at Centre County Prison and faces charges of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, and unlawful contact with a minor after an investigation that began in Fall 2022 into repeated abuse from 2016 to 2018—he is held without bail and is set to appear at a preliminary hearing on Aug. 6. - ➤ Sophia Mucciolo, an ecology student at the Huck Institutes, received a National Science Foundation fellowship for her research on monarch butterflies—she will use video surveillance and computer vision to study caterpillar survival in backyard gardens in Centre County. She is one of eight Penn State winners chosen for the competitive award that provides three years of funding with a yearly stipend, tuition support and a scholarship starting next academic year. - ➤ Asa Reynolds, a cybersecurity student at Penn State, won first place in Reign 2025—a national contest hosted by the Department of Energy on July 19—and competed as an individual among 118 students from 67 colleges & trained in over 20 competitions before the event. - ➤ Centre County administrators are investigating why the county was labeled as a noncompliant sanctuary jurisdiction by the Department of Homeland Security in May+when officials said it defied federal immigration law, and they are concerned the designation may affect roughly $51 million in state and federal funds. - ➤ Centre County officials confirmed that West Nile virus was found in mosquitoes from Patton and Spring townships — the county’s Mosquito Disease Control Program will continue surveillance, sampling and larval control while residents are advised to remove stagnant water from their yards. WTAJ
- ➤ Researchers at Penn State and the WHO have developed a new method to estimate measles vaccination levels when survey data is missing. The approach uses routine clinic data and will help guide public health actions to slow measles outbreaks. Penn State
