EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anna Marshall, associate director for Asia Partnerships at Penn State Global, completed a two-week Fulbright program in Japan from June 16 to 27 (visiting six universities, MEXT, and several cultural sites to learn about the education system). Her experience helped build new ties with Japanese institutions that will guide future collaborations.  Penn State
  • Ross Student Farms at Penn State will host a Summer Plant Sale on July 24 and 25 from 2:30 to 5 p.m.—the event at Headhouse III on Curtin Road will offer pesticide-free vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings grown by student interns to support educational programs.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society with the School of Hospitality Management will honor 14 alumni on Oct. 15 at the Marriott Foundation Building in University Park. The event—part of the 20th annual Alumni in the Classroom program—will celebrate the work of hospitality management graduates.  Penn State
  • Assistant professor Mariah Harmon explained that teacher education programs can better serve Black women pre-service teachers feeling isolated if they center their voices—her study used in-depth interviews and online counterspace sessions, and she said such changes may also ease the national teacher shortage.  Penn State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Penn State researchers modeled nuclear winter scenarios and found that a regional conflict could cut corn yields by 7% while a global conflict could cut yields by 80% plus extra UV damage might lower production further. They recommended preparing agricultural resilience kits with seeds for varieties that grow in cooler conditions to help farmers if a crisis happens.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Centre Area Transportation Authority announced that its new Token Transit mobile validators will launch Aug. 1 so riders can use a smartphone app to buy passes and store them—cash and tokens will still be accepted. The agency will soon add reloadable smart cards, paper tickets with QR codes and tap-to-pay using credit or debit cards, and visitors can get help at the customer service center at 108 E. Beaver Ave.  StateCollege.com
  • Drivers in Centre County experienced traffic delays after PennDOT began maintenance work on Monday, July 21 — including short-term lane closures on Interstate 80, I-99 and Route 322 while crews handled bridge cleaning, manual patching and vegetation management across several townships. The schedule may change if weather or emergencies affect the work.  WTAJ

  • Penn State football is favored to win the Big Ten after receiving 11 first-place votes in the Cleveland.com preseason poll — the team led by quarterback Drew Allar will start its season on Aug. 30 at 3:30 p.m. against Nevada at Beaver Stadium.  StateCollege.com
