COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Centre County YMCA held a kids’ farmer’s market on Thursday where children used Y-bucks to choose fresh fruits and vegetables with help from Penn State Lady Lions—teaching healthy eating in a fun, hands-on way. The program will continue this weekend in Bellefonte to offer more nutritious food to local families.  ABC 23

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County opened nominations for the 2025 Business Awards, which honor local individuals, businesses, and nonprofits making a big impact on our region—nominations are accepted until September 5th. Winners will be celebrated at an awards reception on October 23rd at The Nittany Lion Inn—public registration for the event opens in August.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Penn State Board of Trustees approved the 2026-27 operating budget and tuition schedules on July 18 at Penn State Abington, freezing tuition for nearly 18,000 Pennsylvania resident undergraduates at its Commonwealth Campuses for the fourth consecutive year. The budget includes a 2% tuition increase at University Park, a 3% pool for merit-based salary raises, and a 4% boost to graduate assistant stipends—measures aimed at balancing affordability with strategic investments—according to the University.  Penn State
  • Peter Heaney retired on June 30 after a 27-year career at Penn State where he taught geosciences and inspired many students—he also discussed his work in environmental mineralogy and his recovery from stage 4 prostate cancer in a recent Q&A.  Penn State
  • Gary Abdullah, the assistant dean for diversity and inclusion at Penn State’s Bellisario College of Communications, was awarded the 2025 Lion’s Paw Medal for his work in creating a welcoming environment for students facing academic and personal challenges. Born and raised in State College, he keeps a box of tissues and a bowl of chocolates in his office—simple comforts that help students during tough times—and listens closely to their concerns.  StateCollege.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bear Meadows Natural Area was added to the national Old-Growth Forest Network as the 39th Pennsylvania forest — and the first in Centre County — located in Rothrock State Forest near Boalsburg.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State women’s hockey defenseman Sophie Morrow and forward Mikah Keller were invited to the USA Hockey U19 Camp to try out for a spot on Team USA’s U19 team. Their strong play last season earned the invites and they now will prepare for international competition—an important chance for the team.  Daily Collegian
  • Bryce Molinaro, the Penn State baseball third baseman who started all 56 games last season with 61 RBIs, announced his return for the 2026 season—he was picked in the 17th round by the Washington Nationals.  Daily Collegian
