COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WTAJ honored local resident Nicole Wertz as a hometown hero for her contributions to the community — her feature aired on June 30th.  WTAJ
  • The Downtown State College Improvement District will host Discovery Day on July 8 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Children’s Department—where children can make Hoop Gliders on a first-come, first-served basis with limited supplies and no registration required.  Downtown State College
  • A free movie for kids will be shown on July 8 at The State Theatre, featuring Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie—parking is not allowed in the Schlow Library lot during the screening—and no registration is needed.  Downtown State College

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Scott Conklin confirmed Saturday he will run for reelection in 2026 for the 77th District after a primary challenger emerged for next May's contest, saying his experience and leadership are needed. He noted that his offices in State College and Philipsburg will continue to serve the community as he seeks his 11th term.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three-star offensive tackle Marlen Bright committed on Saturday to join Penn State football's 2026 recruiting class, making him the fourth offensive tackle commit and a top player from DePaul Catholic in Wayne, New Jersey. He is ranked No.8 in his state and chose Penn State over Stanford + Illinois.  Onward State
  • Four-star defensive end Tyson Harley has committed to Penn State Football. The Gonzaga High School product (ranked second in the Washington D.C. area) chose the Nittany Lions over Maryland, Michigan State, and Rutgers after posting 30 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and six sacks in six games.  Onward State
  • Two former Penn State men's lacrosse players, TJ Malone and Matt Traynor, were named to Team East rosters in the PLL All-Star Game held Saturday. Malone played in five games with 13 goals and 8 assists and is listed as injured while Traynor, a rookie starter, appeared in 13 games with seven goals and six assists.  Onward State
