- ➤ Organizers near Penn State’s Beaver Stadium finished setting up one of the state’s largest fireworks shows for today’s Fourth Fest, with a 32-minute display costing about $5000 a minute—planners say fiscal challenges mean next year’s celebration will be smaller despite drawing thousands each year. - ➤ OSHA responded to a construction accident at Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College on June 27—federal inspectors began checking Alliance Exterior Construction Inc. on June 30 and have up to six months to complete the investigation while the hospital said its thoughts are with the injured worker and family. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ State College will host the 59th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts from July 9 through July 13 on downtown streets and Penn State's University Park campus, with events from a Children and Youth Day kickoff to a Grand Procession of papier-mâché puppets. - ➤ Jay Dyer joined the Penn State women's lacrosse staff as the assistant director of athletic performance on July 3rd. He spent 25 seasons as a strength coach at Johns Hopkins (and worked with U20 Team USA) and brings his experience to help the team in Happy Valley. Daily Collegian
- ➤ Ying-Ling Jao from the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and will be formally recognized at the academy’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. from Oct 16th to 18th — the honor highlights her role in leading research and innovation in dementia care. - ➤ State College professor Alexandra Staub released her book Architecture and Social Sustainability: Understanding the New Paradigm, which details how architects can design buildings that better serve everyone in the community.
