COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Discovery Day will be held on July 1 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Downtown State College Improvement District—attendees can join the Children’s Department to make Fireworks with Cray-pas on a first-come, first-served basis as supplies are limited.  Downtown State College

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State announced it will begin a new priority hiring process on July 1 for full-time staff and non-tenure-line faculty impacted by the planned closures of seven Commonwealth campuses at the end of the 2026-27 academic year—job postings will open with an exclusive seven-day window for eligible employees. Virtual information sessions are scheduled on June 30, with one for NTL faculty from 11 a.m. to noon and one for staff from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.  Daily Collegian

  • Penn State basketball announced Saturday morning that Slovenian forward Sasa Ciani has committed to the team—he is the second Slovenian this week and spent last season at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he averaged 9.9 points and 7.6 rebounds.  Onward State
  • Aaron Brooks—four-time NCAA champion and Olympic bronze medalist—reportedly failed a USADA drug test and could face a one- or two-year suspension that would limit his freestyle action. He warned that an innocent grocery store item can trigger serious consequences and he remains eligible for the 2028 Olympic Games.  Onward State
  • Five-star kicker Adam McCann-Gibbs announced on Saturday his commitment to Penn State football+ he is the first special teams recruit for the 2026 class and will attend IMG Academy for his senior year.  Onward State
  • After winning its 16th Pennsylvania State BB Gun Championship on April 5, the Penns Valley Shooting Team earned a spot in the National Championship in Rogers, Arkansas from June 30 to July 3 — where the team will try to add another title to its three past wins. The team is made up of local youth from Bellefonte, Spring Mills, Centre Hall, Pleasant Gap and Rebersburg.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State commit Kieren Dervin, 18, was drafted No. 65 overall in the third round by the Vancouver Canucks. He split last season with the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL and St. Andrew’s College in U18 AAA—amassing 95 points in 71 games.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men’s hockey forward Charlie Cerrato was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes with the 49th overall pick in the NHL Draft, making him the second Nittany Lion selected after Jackson Smith was taken in the first round on Friday.  Onward State
