- ➤ More than 5,000 homes and businesses lost power Monday afternoon in the State College area when a transformer blew in Ferguson Township on the 1300 block of West College Avenue at about 2:50 p.m.—restoration efforts reduced outages to 3,133 by 4:40 p.m. with most power expected to return by 6:30 p.m. and some in Orchard Park by 8 p.m. StateCollege.com
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fire broke out at Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority’s transfer station at 253 Transfer Road in College Township on Sunday, June 22 and was put out by firefighters within about two and a half hours after a former employee spotted smoke—its cause remains under investigation. - ➤ A fire burned an older-style two-story home on the 100 block of West Main Street in Rebersburg early Monday, destroying most belongings and causing at least two pet cats to perish, though all family members and their two dogs escaped safely. Firefighters from several township agencies controlled the blaze in about 30 minutes—while a fire marshal investigates the likely accidental, electrical cause as community members organize donations to aid the family. - ➤ Researchers from Penn State and other universities received a $500,000 grant from the United Soybean Board to create rapid tests for herbicide-resistant weeds in soybean fields. - ➤ The Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences has launched the Faculty Upskilling Fellowships program to help all tenure-track and tenured faculty learn new skills in artificial intelligence and quantum sciences. - ➤ Penn State’s Child Maltreatment Solutions Network awarded funding to six projects that study ways to help children and families facing abuse. - ➤ Gov. Josh Shapiro’s team has delayed a decision on closing Rockview and Quehanna state prisons which were expected to save $100 million a year. Lawmakers and local officials warn that moving hundreds of workers could lead to job losses and reduced local spending while state officials review the plan further before a final decision is made. - ➤ Mark Ramos, an assistant research professor at Penn State, developed free software called Measurement of Individualized, Evidence‑Based Learning (MIEBL) to help therapists verify if children with autism and other developmental delays are meeting skill milestones during discrete trial training.
