- ➤ Easterseals of Western and Central Pennsylvania will host the fifth annual Walk With Me Centre County event on Saturday, June 28 at Talleyrand Park in Bellefonte where participants will walk 1 mile to support individuals with disabilities. Funds raised will help kids at the Easterseals Child Development Center in State College—highlighting services that assist children like 4-year-old ambassador Keenan and featuring a special appearance by State College native Amanda Strandburg. - ➤ Downtown State College Improvement District is hosting a free Juneteenth celebration for kids today—offering activities, songs, stories and lessons about the end of slavery. The event is recommended for ages 3-12 and needs no registration. Downtown State College
- ➤ Today, Tussey Mountain is launching its eight week WingFest from 5 to 10 p.m. at 301 Bear Meadows Road in Boalsburg—an event where up to 4,000 people will vote on wing sauces, enjoy live music from bands like Uncaged and Caledonia, and sample a variety of foods. Organizers say the festival has evolved from a small patio party into a community favorite that now attracts top chefs and fresh musical acts. StateCollege.com
- ➤ Centre Helps moved into the former Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity house in State College after more than a year of renovations. The nonprofit offers crisis hotline support, food pantry services and youth programs and now uses the first two floors for staff offices, volunteer spaces and a dedicated hotline room (it is conveniently located near campus). - ➤ Maggie Day, a recent Spanish, education and public policy graduate, founded the Reproductive Justice Project at Penn State to advocate for equity and reproductive rights on campus. The club holds events and roundtable discussions to support community collaboration and earned her a Rock Ethics Institute’s Stand Up Award (nominated by faculty). Penn State
- ➤ Coast Guard veteran Jessie Wolfen, now studying psychology at Penn State World Campus and set to graduate in August, aims to build a career in mental health advocacy and supports fellow students through mentorship—her own struggles with mental health inspired her return to school at 28. - ➤ Carlo G. Pantano, a respected glass scientist and former Materials Research Institute director, died May 31 at 74. A memorial service was held on June 14 in State College and plans for a celebration of his life are being arranged. Penn State
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A PA Representative introduced legislation that would regulate skill games - the bill would grandfather current devices and require registration for new ones to limit operations and protect small businesses, clubs and nonprofits. The bill also would track device locations and set guardrails to better distinguish legal games from illegal ones. WTAJ
- ➤ Drivers in Centre County will face temporary lane closures starting Monday, June 23 as PennDOT installs center-line rumble strips and fresh paint on several key routes to improve safety—flaggers will manage traffic until the project wraps up in July, weather permitting and with Donegal Construction Corporation handling the $140,000 work. - ➤ State Representative Scott Conklin announced nearly $700,000 from the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund will support affordable housing in Centre County, with $550,000 allocated to projects in downtown Philipsburg—upgrading the historic James Stott Building—and an additional $350,000 dedicated to a community building at Hillcrest Commons Apartments. The funds will also help local programs provide housing counseling and rental assistance to residents facing homelessness. WTAJ
