COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Downtown State College Improvement District will host Discovery Day on June 17—an event where the Children’s Department offers a craft activity for making paper crocodile puppets using limited supplies. The free event runs from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and is first come first served.  Downtown State College
  • State College residents protested on June 14 at the Allen Street Gates in a 'No Kings' march that began at 1 p.m.—with community members, children and flags present—to oppose authoritarianism. A 'Kick Out the Clowns' protest started at 2 p.m. and featured speakers discussing funding cuts and social struggles.  Daily Collegian

  • A State College man, Michael Barney, 43, drowned while kayaking on Friday in the lower Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle State Park, as the Fayette County Coroner's Office reported that friends and state crews tried to rescue him.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • State College held its sixth annual Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 13th at the Woskob Family Gallery where an African drumline opened the event and art by Nathan Addley and others was on display. Curated by Dr. Grace Hampton, the exhibition featured music, speeches, and refreshments—bringing the community together to honor Black history and culture.  Daily Collegian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Downtown State College Improvement District will host the Toddler Learning Centre Session 1 on June 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Downsbrough Community Room — the free event limits participation to 15 families with toddlers aged 18 to 36 months who will play, learn from an early childhood specialist, practice clean-up, and enjoy a snack with a short story.  Downtown State College

  • Three Penn State-affiliated wrestlers—PJ Duke, Levi Haines, and Kyle Snyder—secured starting positions for the U.S. National Team at the Final X competition in Newark on Saturday. They will represent the United States at the World Championships in Croatia from September 13-21.  Onward State
