- ➤ Benny Leone’s pizzeria opened yesterday at 109 S. Fraser St. in downtown State College to serve giant 28-inch pies cut into oversized slices priced between $5 and $7. The franchise offers late-night service—open until 1 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday—and features a warm, busy dining atmosphere for locals and students. - ➤ A State College man was arrested after he set a Pride flag on fire, shouted homophobic slurs and damaged decorations outside Faith United Church of Christ in downtown State College. He faces felony, misdemeanor and summary charges and will be arraigned in July—local church officials say the community will not tolerate hate. WTAJ

- ➤ Penn State announced free community events in downtown State College to celebrate Juneteenth on June 13 and 14. The weekend will feature an art exhibit opening with a reception on June 13 — and a block party with food trucks, live music and cultural performances on June 14. Penn State
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at Penn State built the world’s first computer made entirely from two-dimensional materials that are only an atom thick — the device performs simple logic operations using transistors made from molybdenum disulfide and tungsten diselenide. The team used a special process to grow the materials and published their findings on June 11th in Nature, saying the advance could lead to thinner, faster, and more energy-efficient electronics. - ➤ Penn State researchers led by Karen Bierman found that low-income children who received the Head Start REDI program in preschool showed fewer behavior problems and emotional symptoms in high school. The study, published in Child Development, also linked early social skills to better grades and on-time graduation — researchers are now examining if these benefits continue into college and work. - ➤ Penn State Centre Stage returns this summer with two new productions— the musical True Crime Frankenstein or the Modern, Modern Prometheus runs today through June 15 at the Downtown Theatre, and Love Hurts, a free production by Firefly Rep, will run June 16 to 18 at the Overlook Pavilion. - ➤ Alumnus Patrick Whalen Jr. and his wife Kathleen Whalen donated $100,000 to support Penn State's Lion's Pantry and fund the first major gift for the Ross Student Farm renovation project at University Park. Their gift will help provide affordable healthy foods and finance a new building that includes a demonstration kitchen, restrooms, and meeting space for students. Penn State

- ➤ Researchers from Penn State developed a tool called CloseRead to check parts of DNA that are hard to read—especially areas that help the body fight infections. They tested the tool on 74 genomes and found nearly half had errors in these complex regions, and they plan to improve the tool for other difficult parts of the DNA in the future. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center completed its 600th heart transplant on May 19 when it operated on State College resident Paul Clifford, who received a new heart one day after his 51st birthday. The hospital — the only one outside Pittsburgh and Philadelphia offering this surgery — celebrated Clifford’s discharge on June 3 as he continued his recovery. Penn State
