CRIME NEWS

  • Derrick Raimey has filed a federal lawsuit alleging he was racially profiled and brutally beaten during a December traffic stop on Interstate 80, naming 12 state police officers while his requests for an out-of-county jury were denied and he remains jailed—his next court appearance is still unknown.  ABC 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Center for the Book has chosen 13 children’s books for family literacy in its 22nd annual Baker’s Dozen list for 2025. Experts reviewed over 800 books published last year to help libraries, schools & family centers pick titles suited for children aged 3 to 6.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State College Borough Council President Evan Myers criticized a U.S. Department of Homeland Security list that named State College and Centre County as sanctuary jurisdictions - saying the list unfairly shifted blame for immigration enforcement onto local agencies. Mayor Ezra Nanes said local police do not handle federal matters - as they focus on community safety and routine duties.  Daily Collegian
  • Mayor Ezra Nanes issued a proclamation declaring June 19 as Juneteenth Freedom Day to honor the historic end of slavery and the lasting contributions of African American culture—he said the proclamation calls on residents to reflect on past injustices while celebrating heritage.  Daily Collegian

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A team of four Smeal students won the ICSC/UNC Retail Real Estate Case Competition in late May and earned a $10,000 prize by presenting a plan to revitalize a struggling retail center. The students worked under the guidance of clinical associate professor Mallory Meehan—who praised their analysis and creativity—to secure the top finish against 15 other teams.  Penn State

  • Penn State’s University Park campus will host the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 Pennsylvania Happy Valley triathlon on Sunday, June 15, a race that features a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run which will affect campus and local roads and parking areas. Transportation Services advises drivers to review travel plans and allow extra time due to closures starting as early as 3 a.m.—road impacts include segments of Curtin Road, Pollock Road, and others.  Penn State
  • Penn State women's volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley will throw the first pitch on June 8 at the White Sox versus Royals game. The Chicago native who battled cancer while leading her team to a national championship in 2024 is returning to her roots—she will mark this special day with pride.  Daily Collegian
  • After a promising 2024-25 season, hockey player JJ Wiebusch, who ranked third on Penn State with 33 points, is expected to receive an invitation to the New York Rangers’ summer development camp — he is 21 and ineligible for the 2025 NHL draft.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women's basketball hired former WNBA player Shenise Johnson as its new assistant coach after Daniel Barber’s one-and-done stint ended. Johnson, who played at Miami—where she became one of the top scorers and later competed professionally—brings valuable experience to the team.  Daily Collegian
