BUSINESS NEWS

  • 7 Brew is planning its second drive-thru coffee shop in a 510 sqft prefabricated building on the Nittany Mall property. College Township Council will review the sketch plan at 7 p.m. on Thursday (adjacent to McDonald’s and across from Happy Valley Casino).  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • State College celebrates Pride Month with a parade on June 13 at 10 a.m. beginning at the Area High School and winding downtown to Sidney Friedman Park for a festival from noon to 4 p.m. A 7 p.m. after party and a prom style Youth Gayla on June 20 are planned.  Daily Collegian
  • The Pennsylvania Center for the Book at Penn State University Libraries selected Cordelia Jensen’s Lilac and the Switchback and Stewart O’Nan’s Evensong to represent Pennsylvania in the Library of Congress Great Reads program.   • Pennsylvania fruit growers reported 70% to 90% crop losses after an April freeze damaged blooms, leaving many facing a tough season. Penn State Extension educators are offering on-farm consultations & guidance to help farmers manage the crisis and plan for next season.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The NSF NCEMS at Penn State has awarded four researchers from around the world for building machine learning approaches to harmonize proteomics data. Winners Jason Karpeles, Juan Gil, Kimberly Duran, and Rohan Vinaik received prizes from a competition hosted on Kaggle (the online platform).  Penn State
  • Ibrahim Ozbolat, a Penn State professor, was elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his groundbreaking work on 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine (which supports advances in tissue engineering) and joins a select group recognized for their contributions.  Penn State
  • Penn State recognizes 15 full-time faculty, staff and technical service employees who reached their 25-year milestone in May (as part of its ongoing recognition series). They receive a personalized numeral and may choose a gift from the program catalog.  Penn State
  • Penn State distinguished professor Sridhar Komarneni celebrated 50 years of service on March 1 with the College of Agricultural Sciences. He began in 1976 and still teaches clay mineralogy while advancing research at the university.  Penn State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Penn State meteorology researchers received a NSF grant of $700,000 to expand radar studies of the boundary layer at University Park. The project will compare radar data with weather balloon measurements from the Walker Building to help improve local weather forecasts.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • StateCollege.com and 23 other local news outlets announced today the formation of the Pennsylvania Independent News Association to support digital publication rights and reform public notice laws. The Harrisburg-based coalition will work with state legislators to modernize news policies and secure community news sustainability.  StateCollege.com
  • Today, Tuesday, June 2, South Atherton Street’s northbound lane is reduced to one lane from Highland Alley to West Beaver Avenue as TerraWorks installs sewer lines for the Calder Way project in State College (traffic changes will extend through June 3 to 4).  StateCollege.com

  • Former Penn State wide receiver Bobby Engram is on the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, the National Football Foundation announced (80 FBS players and nine coaches were named) yesterday, and his record-setting career at Penn State boosts his candidacy ahead of early next year’s Hall results.  StateCollege.com
