EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State will close seven Commonwealth campuses by 2027 because fewer students and rising costs have forced it to reallocate funds—its 2025-26 budget shifts nearly $90 million amid these changes. The move mirrors a national trend as other land-grant universities cut regional campuses due to lower state funding and growing expenses.  Daily Collegian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Homeland Security removed a list that wrongly included Centre County and State College as a sanctuary jurisdiction — local officials said they have no such policy. Neither the borough nor the county received a formal notification about non-compliance with federal immigration enforcement.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State men’s lacrosse ended its season with an 11 to 9 loss to Cornell in the NCAA Final Four and finished with a 12 to 5 overall record and a 3 to 2 conference mark at Panzer Stadium.   • Jackson Smith committed to Penn State men’s hockey on Sunday and became the third-highest rated defenseman on Central Scouting’s North American list; he recorded five goals + two assists in his last ten games and is predicted to be a first-round NHL draft pick.  Onward State
  • Today, 96 high school teams start the PIAA softball tournament as seven Mid-Penn teams and two Tri-Valley teams compete in six brackets at venues from Boyertown High School to FDR Park — all leading to title games next week.  PennLive
  • The State College Area Roller Derby league is charging forward with a program that welcomes everyone and offers support through its Betty Fund—organizing community events and planning a winter home bout in State College while competing in a tournament on Friday, June 6 in Scranton.  StateCollege.com
  • Many Penn State men’s soccer players have done well in pro soccer — Femi Awodesu scored his first MLS goal for Houston Dynamo 2 and Pierre Reedy played for Spokane Velocity.
