COMMUNITY NEWS

  • High Point Skate Park opened Friday at 855 West Whitehall Road in High Point Park. The 20,000 sqft park was built last year with grants and over $100,000 in donations and is open from dawn to dusk (without lighting), with parking on Stratford Drive and at Whitehall Road Regional Park.  Onward State
  • State College celebrated the opening of its long-planned High Point Action Sports Park on Friday (855 W. Whitehall Rd.), a 20,000 sqft public facility converted from a former baseball field that now features plazas, ramps, and areas for skateboards, scooters, bikes, and roller skates and is open daily.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State men’s basketball held its 29th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament on Friday at Walker Clubhouse at the Penn State golf courses. Over 425 golfers played two rounds to help the chapter (active for 30 years) raise more than $5 million for cancer research.  Daily Collegian

  • Jim Brown, the longtime manager at Penn State Berkey Creamery, will retire on June 8 (trading his scoop for a fishing rod) and look forward to more outdoor time with family. He modernized operations over two decades, boosting student learning and community ties.  Penn State
  • Hadi Hosseini, an associate professor at the College of Information Sciences and Technology, was elected president of the International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems effective May 29 to lead global research on artificial intelligence and multiagent systems.  Penn State
  • Penn State University Libraries honored 16 outstanding faculty and staff from various campuses at its May 27 virtual event — a tradition spanning 50 years — recognizing excellence in service and support across academic communities.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oleksandr Kodola, mayor of Nizhyn, will visit on Monday to meet residents and officials in the council chambers at the State College Municipal Building from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. (It is his first visit since the sister city agreement was signed last May.)  StateCollege.com
  • Last week, bike lanes on Foster Avenue were painted lime-green with dashed markings at intersections to improve pedestrian safety and visibility. Borough spokesperson Jessi Blanarik noted the trial run may lead to additional painted lanes in other locations if the project proves successful.  Onward State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nittany Lions forward Gavin McKenna will participate in the NHL Combine in Buffalo later this month, having skipped the IIHF World Championship to focus on testing and summer training + he scored 15 goals and 36 assists this season.  Onward State
  • A review piece detailed the top 10 athletic moments from the 2025-26 season at Penn State, showcasing record-breaking plays in baseball and thrilling finishes in wrestling, volleyball and hockey. The feature (highlighting both challenges and successes) shows how local athletes energized the community during a memorable year.  Onward State
  • Penn State baseball freshman catcher Jimmy Gray announced he will enter the transfer portal when it opens Monday, June 1. The redshirted player, who earned All-State honors at Salesianum School in Delaware and posted a .330 average his junior year, has four years of eligibility remaining.  Onward State
  • Fairfield outfielder TJ Schmalzle transferred to Penn State baseball after announcing his decision on social media Thursday. He will play his final season as a graduate transfer in his home state and aims to add speed and scoring ability to the team.  Onward State
  • Penn State men's basketball has updated its coaching staff with Brent Scott promoted to associate head coach (he previously served as an assistant under Mike Rhoades) and new roles for Patrick Dorney and Jake Szczecina, while Sam Little becomes video coordinator.  Onward State
  • Penn State women's volleyball released its full 2026 schedule with nonconference play starting with an exhibition at AT&T Stadium and a Penn State Invitational homestand, followed by Big Ten contests on Sept. 25 at Michigan and ending with the Tournament at Fishers Event Center from Nov. 20 to 26.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State track and field athlete Jake Palermo (a sophomore) broke a record that lasted 51 years by finishing the 400m in 45.19 seconds on Friday at the NCAA East First Round meet, earning his third school mark after Mike Sands set the previous time in 1975.  Daily Collegian
