  • State College celebrated the grand opening of East End Social, a seasonal pocket park on Hiester Street, with a block party Thursday, May 28. The park will host summer community events as organized by the Downtown State College Improvement District and Comet Properties (its creators) to enhance downtown life.  StateCollege.com
  • Spring Creek Chapter Trout Unlimited will host its 10th Annual Family Fishing Picnic on Sunday, June 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Tussey Mountain Pond (a free event featuring family-friendly fishing, outdoor activities, a guided hike, and environmental education).  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Penn State’s Office of Government and Community Relations is meeting with lawmakers in Harrisburg during budget season to secure increased state funding that supports tuition discounts, research, and essential services & encourages community advocacy through grassroots action.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s Materials Characterization Lab partners with AGC Chemicals Americas and Avery Dennison on two projects funded by the Manufacturing PA Innovation Program. The projects use shared research tools to enhance workforce training and industrial innovation at the Materials Research Institute in University Park.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT will close part of Jacksonville Road between the I-80 on-off ramps from Monday, June 1 for five days to complete drainage work on the high-speed interchange connecting I-80 and I-99 near Bellefonte (closure details may change with weather).  StateCollege.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • State College-based Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund will launch its '$20K for 20 Years' Online Giving Campaign on June 1 — the 20-week drive aims to raise $20,000 to help 20 cancer patients and their families cover living expenses. The campaign marks the fund's 20th anniversary, honoring local native Bob Perks.  StateCollege.com
  • A new Penn State study shows that AI chatbots answer everyday health queries with nearly 76% accuracy but have higher error rates than human doctors in specialized fields. Researchers will share the results at FAccT (Association for Computing Machinery Fairness, Accountability and Transparency) in Montreal from June 25-28.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a disappointing 2025-26 season, Penn State Athletics is preparing for a 2026-27 turnaround with new coaching hires and recruiting efforts, and the outlook highlights changes in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and lacrosse in Happy Valley.  Onward State
  • Penn State softball player Allison Oneacre was named to Softball America’s Freshman All-America First Team on Thursday — recognizing her record-setting performance with a .385 batting average, 56 RBIs and 16 home runs during her freshman season.  Onward State
  • Penn State track star Hayley Kitching broke the 800m school record on Wednesday with a time of 1:59.60 to secure a place in the finals on Saturday. The athlete from Coffs Harbour had previously set records in the 600m, 1,000m and 1,500m races.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women’s volleyball released its 2026 schedule on Thursday; the season opens on August 27 at AT&T Stadium during the Spikes Under the Lights Tournament & features key games against UConn on August 29, Kentucky at Wrigley Field, and Stanford at The Palestra.  Onward State
  • Coach Tanisha Wright secured a commitment from former Nevada guard Skylar Durley as the ninth recruit for Penn State’s 2026-27 women’s basketball team on Thursday + Durley was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year after averaging 11.8 points and six rebounds last season.  Daily Collegian
