COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Centre Helps began operating today from a renovated former fraternity building at 406 S. Pugh St. The building holds offices for crisis management, a volunteer break room, and a suicide prevention call center, with plans to add apartments on the third floor (the borough funded most of the renovations).  WTAJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Centre County firefighters spent six hours on May 27 rescuing Blizzard after he got trapped in a storm drain near his family's backyard in Boalsburg — crews had to cut open the road to free him — and his relieved family celebrated as he enjoyed a hot dog.  WTAJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State has announced that many tenured and tenure-line faculty will be promoted—beginning July 1—to professor, librarian, and associate professor roles. The list covers staff across various departments and colleges, and these changes will advance academic careers.  Penn State
  • Three Penn State staff members were honored with 2025 USAC Staff Awards during a ceremony on May 16 in Old Main’s Alumni Lounge at University Park — Andrew Pron received the Staff Leadership Award, Alex Zimmerman the Staff Excellence Award, and Angela Dixon the Staff Morale Award. Nominees highlighted their achievements in instructional design, online learning and departmental support, underscoring how they embodied Penn State values.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Centre County District Attorney Office has nominated six local officers for the 2024 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award—each nominee is recognized for actions like saving lives, solving cold cases, and leading complex investigations. Nominees include Lt. Charles Hamilton of the State College Police Department, Officer Lisa Larkin, Trooper Tyler Prisk, Detective Nicholas Sproveri and Patton Township Police Officer Elijah Vardzel.  WTAJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A team of Penn State and international researchers found that lotions and perfumes change the natural chemicals on our skin that help block indoor air pollution. Controlled tests and computer models showed that unscented lotion has a longer effect than perfume — the study may lead to a better understanding of how our bodies protect against ozone exposure.  Penn State
  • Michael E. Kupferman has been appointed to lead Penn State Health as its next CEO by President Neeli Bendapudi and the Health Board. He will assume his role on Monday, June 23 and work with the College of Medicine to advance patient care, research, and education in the region.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State women’s volleyball released its 2025 Big Ten schedule after their 2024 championship, announcing home games in late September and early October and a road match at Maryland on October 5. The schedule shows the Nittany Lions will face Nebraska, Maryland, and Ohio State twice + the team is led by Katie Schumacher-Cawley with transfers strengthening its roster after losing key players last season.  Onward State
