COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, a ribbon-cutting and block party kick off the grand opening of East End Social (a seasonal pocket park on Hiester Street in downtown) with festivities starting at 5 p.m. The park will host community events, art displays and casual gatherings until early August.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State’s interdisciplinary team and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay have received a $250,000 grant to study how conservation agriculture may affect dairy farm workers’ safety, work hours, and pay at six local farms. The project will develop a tool (an assessment framework) and education program to measure worker well-being.  Penn State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Professor Ken Davis and his research group from Penn State are using advanced climate data collection and modeling to guide local strategies on urban heat and air quality, helping communities decide on measures like adding vegetation + using reflective surfaces for greater cooling and improved public health.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT will begin reconstructing the bridge at the Pike Street/Houserville Road intersection on June 1, which will cause lane closures and detours on East College Avenue through mid-August — project work ending early November.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State football’s season opener against Marshall is scheduled for Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m. on FS1; this marks the teams’ third meeting, with previous contests before 1930 ending in wins for Penn State.  Onward State
  • Penn State fans will soon be able to buy single-game tickets for fall football at Beaver Stadium via TicketMaster; sales begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 5 (verified resale tickets from season ticket holders are already available online at varied prices).  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State (Nittany Lions) will play Buffalo at noon on Sept. 19 on the Big Ten Network in its final nonconference game, marking one of the few matchups since 1930.  Onward State
  • Penn State football will begin the season at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 5 against Marshall on FS1 as coach Matt Campbell starts a new era without James Franklin and Drew Allar.
