BUSINESS NEWS

  • State College Regional Airport is preparing for new American Airlines flights between State College and Charlotte starting in October 2026. The service will run two round-trip flights most days, with departures at 6:35 a.m. and 4:53 p.m.  Daily Collegian

CULTURE NEWS

  • First-year architecture students teamed with Morgan State grads to design 'Our Stoop, Our Culture, Our City' — a public art installation that was shown at Artscape in Baltimore on May 23-24. The project taught them teamwork and design skills.  Penn State

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Researchers at Penn State developed a new tourism sustainability index that tracks changes in housing, air quality, crime, and health from 2009 to 2019 (the study appears in Tourism Economics). The tool will help local leaders plan tourism that boosts morale without straining community resources.  Penn State
  • Beginning Oct. 5, State College Regional Airport will add two daily nonstop flights by American Airlines to Charlotte. The service aims to boost local business and expand travel options for Centre County residents.  Onward State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State’s five new Academic Leadership Program fellows have been chosen for 2026-27 by the Big Ten Academic Alliance and will attend three in-person seminars at Michigan State, Northwestern, and the University of Michigan to develop their leadership skills (selected for their significant contributions).  Penn State
  • Palmer Moore, a recent Penn State Smeal graduate, donated surplus funds to support the Sapphire Academic Leadership Program and the Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility. His gift will help expand leadership opportunities through case competitions and mentorship for future students.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences named longtime faculty member Beth Gugino as associate dean for research operations and graduate education, effective June 1, while she continues as associate director of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station. Gugino will lead research facilities and graduate education programs + promote innovative agricultural practices.  Penn State
  • Today, Leo Conway, director of Penn State's Upward Bound Programs, received a TRIO Educator/Leader Award for decades of dedicated service helping thousands of students and strengthening educational opportunities in local school districts.  Penn State
  • The Daily Collegian is accepting applications from current Penn State students for summer candidacy roles in news, sports, photo and visuals — including graphic design, social media and illustration. Applications must be submitted by June 19 at 11:59 p.m., after which a Board of Editors may schedule interviews.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State College of Engineering researchers in University Park study birds, fish, lizards, insects to build robots that simulate natural processes and improve biorobotics. Their work may lead to advances in agriculture, medical care, and disaster recovery (applications here could reshape industries).  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • After cannabis was reclassified on April 26 from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug, Penn State professor Emily Ansell said heavy use can lead to addiction and health problems and that the change may let researchers study real-world products; she noted safety concerns (dosing and manufacturing issues persist).  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Iowa State coaches and players are joining Penn State as a review of Iowa State's volatile 2025 season shows that on-field struggles and late-game resilience amid injuries could boost the Nittany Lions. Fans can expect changes that may improve play in coming games.  StateCollege.com
  • Special Olympics Pennsylvania will host its 56th Summer Games from June 4 to 6 on the University Park campus with athletes and coaches competing in five sports (aquatics, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, tennis). Volunteers are needed, and the opening ceremony begins at 7:15 p.m. at Medlar Field.  StateCollege.com
